Static Electricity

Below is a picture of Clara (about 4 years ago). She briefly turned her soccer goal into a fort/tent with a blanket on top, and (as you can see) some serious static electricity was produced!




After watching the demos AND contemplating some of your own experiences with static electricity, answer the following questions in a comment on this blog post:

  2. Seeing everyone scream. It was funny. Winter because it is the most dry in the winter. Friction between two objects. It doesn't work when there are water molecules floating in the air.

  4. This one at the washington pavillion were we lit up a light by holding hands. You get shocked the most in winter because the air is dry. you need to loose electrons from atoms. static electricity has to do with chemistry because it is stripping atoms of their electrons.

    2. I would think probably fall or maybe summer because it's dry out during my seasons.
    3. It has to do with how the atom is negatively charged and that will make you shock people.

  6. The VanDeGraff because it produced electrons and gave you a shock. Winter cause their isn't a lot of water molecules in the air. Electrons because it happens cause friction. It involves electrons, protons, and neutrons inside the atom to get static electricity.

  8. My favorite static electricity demo was when we all chocked each other from the giant silver ball. Fall or Winter is when you get shocked the most often because that's when it's the most dry. Electrons are needed to produce static electricity this is caused by air building up. This has to do with the atom's structure because that is where it all happens.

  9. 1.The one with the ball, because it was fun to see how long the electricity would extend.

    2.You get shocked the most often in the winter, because it is more dry and is easier to produce electricity.

    3.Static electricity is caused by an imbalance of protons and neutrons. A good conductor of electricity is needed to do this.

    4.It has to do with that because it is is involved with atoms because it has protons and neutrons that are imbalance, and all of that junk has to do with the atoms structure, like the electrons, protons, and neutrons, and atoms are a part of chemistry, so it is all connected.

  16. 1. The part when Mr. Hoegh touched the electric ball thing and then someone hooked hands with him and then you could still shock someone through that.
    2. Probably the winter because it gets really dry.
    3.Dry weather and protons and neutrons. When electrons transfer to protons.
    4. Because the protons and neutrons are what we are learning about and they causing the static electricity.

  18. 1. My favorite demo was the one where we got to touch the generator. I got a good shock so it was fun.
    2. Winter, because it builds up the best at this time.

    3. The build up of excess charge and when electrons bounce around to try and balance it.
    4. It has a lot to do with the subatomic particles of atoms because that is how they're formed.

    2. In the winter because there is less humidity in the air.
    3. To make static electricity you need friction between to objects.
    4. Static electricity had to do with atoms because it's the electrons touching each other and chemistry because it deals with atoms.

  22. My favorite static electricity was the vandagraph experiment because it was really fun.
    The time of year you get shocked in is close to Christmas and Fall. because it is really dry out in those seasons.
    Static electricity is a kind of altering current. It dose't just go in one direction it goes in all directions. It rubs together to create friction.
    atoms are in the electricity so is protons because they are a positive charge.

  24. I liked the Vand de graaff! Because it shocked people and it was funny! Winter because the air is dry. Friction and it is caused by the surface roughness of the contact area. Because there is static electricity everywhere.

  25. My favorite static electricity demo was the van degraaff thingy, when you shocked mason. I get shocked most probably in the fall or winter. Static electricity is caused by atoms being rubbed together. Static electricity is electricity that does not flow in a current. Static electricity is part of chemistry because it has to do with atoms.

  28. My favorite demo was with the van de graaff. I liked it because because you could see it shocking people. It was funny! You get shocked the most in winter because it is drier than in summer. To produce static electricity you need electrons because they would give other atoms a negative charge. Chemistry, atoms and their structure, have to deal with static electricity because atoms are the basis of chemistry, and atoms contain electrons.

    2.You get shocked most often in the winter because of the dry weather and friction that causes heat so it makes a shock

    3.Static electricity causes your hair to stand up, it also can give you a big or little shock depended on the amount of static.

    2.summer cause when its really hot say in your house your balnket will get full of static electricity and shock u alot.

    3. You need two objects rubbing together, to cause friction. It is caused by the electrons jumping to a nearby by atom and it creates a current.

    4. Electricity is caused when electrons get attracted to a different atoms protons, and the electrons jump to the nearby atom.

    2. Winter. i think because its really dry and there is hardly any water in the air so it makes it easier for electricity to be produced.

  39. 1.The ball that would shock Mr. Hoegh was cool. It got his toe, lol. Also it was pretty cool how it would travel too.
    2.Winter, it makes the air more dry than the summer.
    3.To have two atoms conect or something, I think.
    4.Electricity has to do with the electrons where they are either apart from each other or together.

    1.) My favorite demo is by far the balloon and hair, seeing the electricity go through people is pretty cool.

    2.)Winter, because you are less moist, so more charge is able to come.

    3.) Electrical charge! It is caused by atoms rubbing together, bunching the electrons.

    4.)The electricity is caused by atoms, it is rubbing their atoms together, making the electrons bunch up and cause electric charge.

  42. i liked the electricity ball because it was cool and interesting because it went through lots of people and you still got shocked

    You get shocked most in the winter because the winter air is very dry and summer air is more humid the humid air helps electrons move more quickly so they cannot build static

    It needs positive and negative charge and it is caused by static friction and atoms

    atoms are the main cause for static electricity

    2. Winterrrr! Because.. your skin isn't as moist and you aren't sweating as much and stuff.

  44. 1)Rubbing the balloon in our hair or trying to move the popsicle stick or the electrostaic generator.
    2)In the winter, because when it is humid there ins't as much static and in the winter the air is dry.
    3)Electrons rubbing against each other.
    4) The Electrons make the eletricity and they are on the outer part of the atom.

  47. my favorite static electricity demo was the generator, because it was sooooo funny to watch Mr. Hoegh. Winter is the most time of the year you would get shocked, because the air is dry. Needed to produce static electricity is to rub two thing together, and what causes thats is to electrons rubbing against each other! electrons are in atoms wich is in electricity!

  48. the demo with the globe. It was fun to shock people and see the little tiny lightning.
    You get shocked more in winter, because winter is dry and summer is humid the high humidity makes the electrons move more quickly so they cant produce static.
    you would have to have neutrons and protons from atom and everything is made of atoms. its caused from electrons moving from one object to the other creating static build up.
    if everything wasnt made of atoms we wouldnt have any static
