HEAT (from Bunsen Burner)
Add iron filings and sulfur together, and place in test tube. Add heat from the Bunsen burner. Simmer for several minutes. Let reaction occur in a fume hood to prevent the aroma from going around the whole school.

1) The mixture had bubbled and discolored the test tube glass that had held it. Then it caught on fire.

1- the substance was melting. it was changing color so instead of it being yellowish brown it turned black. it was also bubbling a little bit. the substance also changed into a liquid.
2- yes, it changed because it turned into a liquid and it changed into a gas before it made the fire at the top.

1: some signs that a chemical change took place it was burning and there was a change of color. i noticed that it burnt in the test tube until it became a black reddish color and when the gas reached the top it formed a blue flame
2: Yes, the color changed from the burning, it was not magnetic because the iron reacted fully and the new substance became non magnetic. Flammability was shown when we burned it, and also reactivity was showned.
3: When we burned the new substance, it lost its weight from the burning i believe. when the gas came out of the beaker, and the blue flame i believe signaled it was losing mass.
#1. Well you started with 2 different elments. Then you put them together to make something different. A change in color, look, texure, it totaly went from a powder to a solid round hafe circle! Very Cool!!!
#2. Yes they did. The sulfur started as a powder, and then as it was mixed with the iron (powderish stuff) and as it was lit on fire, it changed into a solid. So there for both changed.
#3. After you have mixed the iron and the sulfur and lit it on fire, all of the extra fluffyness in the powder changed into a solid making it a chemical change. That made it lose mass.

#1- When the test tube was beening heated the tube turned the darker brown. Then when it was burned all the way there was a flame that came out the top there was a bluish purplish/pinkish flame that came out the top.It smelled really bad! Like burnt rotten eggs! yuck!

1. When the two mixed together it created a yellowish black combo. Then flames came out the top.

2. The new substance changed a little bit, it turned silver, solid (not powdery anymore), and it was smooth and shiny. But the new substance was still magnetic.
3. I think the state of matter could change how the mass changed. like, it liquidized when we heated it. so I think that changed the mass.

When the new substance formed some componets did change. It was not magnetic anymore, it weighed more and it changed into a hard solid.
the beaker weighed about 32.7. If it's a chemical reaction it's a NEW thing and it's defferent.
Signs of a chemical change was it foomed up when heated up. It changed colors and started to smell. And their was a fire that it made when it got to the top. The proerties of the original components did change when it made the new substance. It wasnt soft anymore and it wasnt magnites anymore because in a chemical reactiom the proterties of the substances always change as well as the substance. When you make a chemical reaction it doesn't really matter what the other substance and when you make a chemical reation you get a new susbtance and new susbtances weigh different.

2)Yes, the Iron was magnetic and really easy to seperate from the sulfur, with the new mix the two couldn't be seperated and it was no longer magnetic. The colors also changed from one gray and one yellow to brown-black.

1) The reaction was not something I expected to happen. The tube seemed to almost fog up with an orangeish glaze. Then it seemed as if things melted.
2)In a way the iron and the sulfur were the same as before the test. The sulfur was still yellow, and the iron still looked like metallic sand. Yet, they were connected like they hadn't been before, and the sulfur was frozen, rather than the loose flour-y form it was yesterday.
3)My guess is that it had to do with the form it was in. The iron looked the same, but the sulfur didn't. In fact, it appeared like there was less sulfur today, because of a physical change. Even if a chemical change has taken place, physical ones still can. The sulfur was more frozen, then loose as it was before.

1. a chemical change took place because when the fire mixed with the iron filings it changed to gas and the tude had black stuff on the wall of it.

1. You could tell that a chemical change took place because as the test tube heated the bottom of the mixture burned first which made the mixture expand and fill up the tube. As the mixture rose to the top of the test tube the fire had a blue tint to it.
2. The components that were once a powderlike substance was now a liquid, the iron and sulfur mixed and created one new substance.
3. The matter was not destroyed but it became more compact, creating a lesser mass for the new substance.
1 and 2. A chemical change occurs when two substances form a new substance and the original substances lose thier properties. In the lab we recently did, we formed FeS out of Iron and Sulfur. Since a new substance was formed (FeS) and the Sulfur and Iron lost thier properties there was obviously a chemical change.
3. I don't know the actual definate answer to that, but I'm geussing that some of the original substances evaperated due to the heat.
