Rocks

In science, it is our duty to ask "Why?" and "How?" questions about things that are around us (whether those things are common or extraordinary). Like rocks. I have a couple of those questions for you, Crazy 8s:A: This is a picture of an igneous rock. You may construct a paragraph that answers the following questions, or you may answer each question individually.

  1. Why does this igneous rock have crystals?

  2. Where did this rock form? How do you know?

  3. What type of igneous rock is this?

B: This is a picture taken in the Badlands of South Dakota (there are other "badlands", too). The rocks that you see are sedimentary rocks, and they have NOT always been there. Use your knowledge of the rock cycle to answer this question: (If you need a refresher, view the rock cycle prezi in the blog post below this one.)

  • How did these sedimentary rocks get here? (What are some of the events that could lead to the formation of sedimentary rocks?)

A: 1. because it cooled slowly
2. Under the surface of the earth; because if the rock cools above the surface then it does not have crystals and this one does, so it cooled underneath the surface of the earth.
3. intrusive (s/p?)

B: Rain, wind, or snow. Possibly carved by glaciers?

A.1. Because the rock cooled slowly after being a metamorphic rock.
A.2. Under the surface of the earth. Because if it wasn't it wouldn't have crystals
A.3. Intrusive

B. Rain, Wind, or Snow. Possibly glaciers.

The rock shown has crystals because when it was forming, the magma had more time to cool, which allows the crystals to form. This rock formed beneath the earth, because of the size of the crystals. THe type of igneous rock that the sample is an extrusive. THe size of the crystals proves that it formed in the earth, not on the crust.

Zach S said...

This rock has big crystals because it had a long slow time to cool which let the crystals grow.

This rock formed inside the earth, and you can tell this by how big the crystals are. So if they are bigger they were in the earth but if they were smalller they were outsile on the surface.

This rock is intrucive because it has large crystals

Carter Roberts said...

A.
1. Because the magma that it once was, was cooled internally, instead of outside the earths crust
2. Inside the earth. because it has crystals that are visable.
3. an introusive rock.

B. There once was glaciers that came through the midwest. These glaciers eroded and compacted into layers. then dust compacted on the top to form layers.

1. This igneous rock has crystals because this rock cools slowly inside Earth's surface because of the hot temperatures, and the crystals have more time to cool and to grow.
2. This rock formed inside the Earth's surface and i know that becuase it has large visible crystals whcih is a characteristic of an intrusive igneous rock that forms inside the Earth's surface
3. This is an intrusive igneous rock because it has large visible crystals and that is a result of the rock having more time to cool inside Earth's surface

B. Wathering, erosion, and deposition are all possible events that lead to the formation of Sedimentary Rocks

SECOND PICTURE
-At one point there could have been a river or body of water or it could have been just weathering creating this size of sedimentary rock or rocks.

1.) the crystals formed because the magma cooled in a long enough time for those crystals to grow.
2.) the rock was formed below the surface because the crystals are big, so that means that the crystals had a long time to grow.
3.) it is an intrusive igneous rock
4.) the sedimentary rock was made by glaciers eroding the sides of the badlands and compacting layers of sand and dust.

A. 1. Because it was magma that cooled..? Depends on how it cooled, though, that determines the size of the crystals..
2. It formed below the surface because they crystals are large
3. Intrusive Igneous Rock..

B. There could have been a river there before, which brought the sediment, compressed it, and made it sedimentary rock..

The way that the badlands could have come to be as they are today consists of many steps. It would start out as red how magma cooling into igneous. Over the time, weathering and erosion wears away at the rock, depostiting it into different places, such as here in windy South Dakota, where the pieces of rock cement together into different layers. Once again, over time, the moutains that had formed would be worn away and the cycle starts again

when the Igneous rock goes through weather, erodes, deposited it turns in to sedimentary rock.

Drew S said...

1. Over time with intense heat and pressure, crystals form with more time to cool in igneous rock.

2. When magma cools, it forms igneous rock.

3. Intrusive because it formed by the cooling and solidification of magma.

B. Over time when metamorphic rock is weathered, erodes, and is deposited, the rocks becomes sedimentary rocks. The badlands could have been igneous rock, but altered by the rock cycle.

1-magma cools forming crystals that then form in in the igneous rock because of extreme heat and pressure and the amount of time that is giving then forms the crystals into the igneous rock
2-so then the whole like magma cooling thing would form the igneous rock
3-the igneous rock is intrusive because it is formed from the cooling and the solidification of the magma
4-its rock weathers, erodes, and is deposited then forming the sedimentary rock.

The way the Badlands came to be constists of many steps. They would have started out as hot magma that was cooling into ingeous rock. The cooled rock would have been pushed up to the surface, and slowly would have been eroded and weathered. The weathering would have caused depostition, despositing the pieces of rock on different places, such as in Windy South Dakota! The rock would have squeezed together forming layers. The layers would have been eroaed again and the cycle continiued.

the igneous rock has crystals because it took a long time to cool. if this rock would have cooled above earth's surface then it would have cooled fast since it is cool on the surface. however, this rock cooled slowly, and underneath the earth's surface. when rocks are formed underneath the suface, the are called intrusive. so this is an intrusive igneous rock that formed slowly underneath the earth's surface!

allenc said...

this sedimentary rock has crystals since the magma this piece of sedimentary rock formed from cooled slowly allowing crystals to forming this type of forming and coolng is called intrusive since the magma cannot cool as quickly while magma cooled out side cools so fast that the sedimentary rock has no time to form crystals
b.sediment from eroded igneous rocks could have gathered at the badlands of south dakota the sediment then formed together over time creating sedimentary rocks

The prescense of large visible crytals in the rock show that the rock cooled slowly over a long period of time and therefore formed well beneath the Earth's surface. Since it was formed underground it is known as an intrusive rock.

1) The igneous rock has crystals because they form from magma cooling. Crystalization happens under pressure and in hot liquid.

2)This rock formed beneath earth's surface. I can tell because the crystals are larger. Rocks like this will solidify slowly because the area beneath earth's surface is hotter, causing the cooling process to take longer.

3) this is an intrusive rock.

4) sedimentary rocks form when grains of sand are compressed and cemented together. They are made when fragments or rocks settle at the bottom of bodies of water. the farther down the layers are, the older they are.

A: This rock is an extrusive igneous rock. It has crystals because it had alot of time to cool off and grow crystals. This rock formed deep in the Earth's crust, because it had the time to cool off and form crystals, and it didn't cool quickly.. (if it did, it would've formed above Earth's surface becase when they are above
Earth's surface, they cool faster.)

1. igneous rocks have crystals depending on the time it takes to cool down. If it cools fast then igneous rocks have small crystals if it cools slowly then the crystals will be big.

2. igneous rock forms below the surface and above the surface. it melts below the surface and is pushed upward toward the earth's crust. the rock then cools on the earths crust. forming igneous rock.

3. from what I can tell the crystals are small. which means the specific type of this rock is an extrusive igneous rock. which means it cools slowly and has small crystals.

part b:

the sedimentary rock probably weathered and eroded away and was deposited in the ocean or riv etc. and then was forced down and heated to an extreme and melted into magma and then was forced back upward towards the earths crust and cooled and then it started all over again. (not gunna explain again):)

Raphie P said...

Igneous Rocks form either below or above the surface of the earth. When a rock is formed below the surface of the earth it is an intrusive igneous rock. When a rock is formed on the surface of the earth it is an extrusive rock. The rock pictured is an intrusive rock because when a rock is formed below the surface of the earth it has more time to cool so crystals form and the rock pictured has crystals. So the rock is an intrusive igneous rock.

A: This igneous has crystals because it didnt cool very fast, it cooled inside the earth very slowly so it could form its crystals, this rock would be a intrusive rock because it has cooled inside the Earth.

and the last question. to tell you the truth, i don't know. WAIT. The rock gets uplifed from under the Earth. and also the rock builds up and piles up and makes it bigger.(:
i think that's right. no, i'm pretty sure its wrong.. oh well.

well that's all for today(:
