1. The granite under all the layers was forces up with a great amount of pressure from magma in the earths core and formed vast hills and mountains.
2. No the weathering and erosion is what mad the bad lands and if that were to never happen the land formation wouldn't of happened either.
3. 40 million years ago they would have been smaller or bigger depending on the change of pressure under the surface and in another 40 million years it will be different again because the earths core is always changing just not fast enough for a person to see change in their life time.
