Clara is ready to learn........ from YOU

Suppose that you need to explain the concepts of a year, a month, and a day to a small child such as Clara. Could you do this? First, you should know a couple of things about Clara:

  1. She is extremely smart for just turning three years old (I know that you're thinking, "Hmm..... she must get her intellect from her mother." Well, you're right.) Clara will follow your line of thought quite well.
  2. If you use the terms rotation, revolution, orbit, or any other term used specifically for astronomy, she might not know exactly what it means (Many adults wouldn't know what the terms mean either.) Be sure to explain these things as you go.
  3. It would help if you related these concepts to things a 3-year-old would know about -- like Disney movies, Elmo from Sesame Street, Lego Duplo, Clifford the big red dog, etc.
For each concept (year, month, and day) describe the motion of the Earth, the moon, and the sun. Good luck.

ok well lets say that the eath is gunna be clifford.wehn cliford (earth)goes around the sun in one whole circle,it is called revoulutin.so now clifford (earth) turned older one year. For a month the moon goes around the earth.so that would be clifford (earth) spinning while the toy goes around clifford (earth). and for a whole day,it would be cliofford ( earth) spinning in a circle....like him trying to eat bite his tail.

1 year is 365 days and that is when the earth our planet goes arond the sun 1 whole time. 1 day is when our planet rotates 1 time. 1 month is when the moon orbits or goes around the earth 1 time. our planet is like walle the planet wakes up every day and does its job its job is to rotate or orbit and keep us on it by using a very strong force called gravity. a revolution is when our planet orbits around the sun 1 whole time like 1 year

hey clara!
Have you ever seen beauty and the beast? Rotation is just like Bell spinning in her gold dress. The earth spins just like her dress. Around and around.
I'm pretty sure you know what the sun is! right? (: and you know that you live on earth!? well for it to be a year, the earth has to spin around the sun. Did you know it takes 365.25 days for the earth to spin around the sun! That's a long time!
Maybe you are wondering what the earth does all day. Well during the day the earth is always spinning or rotating like Bells dress! During the day when it is sunny we are facing the sun. At night that means where we are facing away from the sun.
You might not understand a month yet, but that is when you see the moon. Do you like the moon? i know i do! it's very pretty sometimes. So when all of the moons show there stuff off, as in quarters and hafe and whole moons, that will be one whole new month! It's almost a new month!
I hope you understood what I told you today!
P.S. I LOVE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!(:

hey clara in the movie cars when you go around the track once it is like the earth going around the sun one whole time!which is one whole year. Also in a day its like when the cars wreck and spin in circles just like how the earth spins on its axis. Plus if you were in the middle of the track and one car goes around the track that would belike the moon rotating around the earth which is how we get the monts of the year.

Brianna :] said...

So, Clara, You know Lightening McQueen, right? well when he zooms around the track to beat The King, and passes the finish line, it is like the earth moving around the sun. Every time the earth makes one full circle around it, it makes one full year! Woah! amazing, right?

When Lightening McQueen is driving, he's wheels are turning around and around and around, just like the moon goes around the earth. When the tire goes around exactly one time around, it is just like when the moon goes around the earth, making one month!

So what happens when McQueen blows a tire? He spins out of control, right? Well that is just like when the erath spins around, making a day. He spins in a circle (kind of) and so does the earth each day.

Now you know :)

Hey, Clara, I'm here to teach you about a year, a month, a day! First lets start with a year. Think of a hula-hoop on the floor. Now we should put a ball or a cirle in the middle. That stands for a sun. Now think of a smaller ball, or a cirle going around the edge of a hula-hoop. If you make the ball go around one time, that a year.
Lets move on to what a day is. Think of a basketball, spinning around one time. Thats what a day is. And as your basket ball is spinning, think of it moving around the hula-hoop. That's how a year and a day work together with the earth.
Now, why dont we end with the month? Tink of your bastketball again. Since you already know that when your basketball spins one time, its a day. Well there are about 30 days in one month. So you bastket ball has to spin 30 times for a monnth to pass.

Alright Clara! Today we're learning about what a year is, a month, and a day =) ;)
Okay. So. To describe revolution or a year, we could use the characters from the movie Cars. :) Imagine Lightning McQueen; he's racing around the track. When he crosses the place that he started at, its like the Earth around the sun. When it crosses where it started, a year has past.

Every month, the moon has made a revolution around the Earth. This is sorta like Lightning around the track, but we're imagining its the moon around the Earth. A month usually has 30 or 31 days, but February has 28; but on leap years February has 29 days. The next leap year is 2012:)

|OMG quick documentation of what I just told Mr. Hoegh. :) Avian Flu happened during the year of the Rooster; Mad Cow happened in the year of the Ox; Swine Flu (H1N1) happened in the year of the pig; and the year 2012 (big conspiracy on the world ending because of the Mayan Calendar ending and they'd been right about most things) is the year of the Dragon. What if it goes up in flames?! :O
doubt that'd happen:)| One day is 24 hours, and it basically is the Earth turning on its axis once. You've seen a globe right? Well, the way it turns is the way the Earth turns each day:)
hope I helped..
Kira Z:)
ps i love science. its amazing

Dear Clara,
In science, we are learning about space. Did you know that Buzz Lightyear goes to space a lot? He has been to the sun, the moon, everywhere! Remember in the movie Sleeping Beauty how the fairies spin their wand in a circle to make a wish come true? That's how the Earth moves. It's called Rotation (Roe-tae-shun). When the Earth goes around one time, it is called a Revolution
( Re-vou-lou-shun). This step takes one day so basically, the Earth is moving right now! When the moon moves in one circle, like the merry-go-round, then a month has passed! When the Earth goes around the sun, then a year has passed! Isn't that cool? Well hope you learned about space! If you
have any questions, ask your dad!

Imagine Big Bird being the sun, he is a big yellow mass of energy. now imagine Oscar the Grouch as the earth, a smaller green mass. Now imagine that Oscar has an instinctive attraction to Big Bird and to fulfill his attraction he needs to look at big bird all the time. Imagine a year being when Oscar walks all the way around Big Bird and imagine a day being when Oscar slips on the ice and twirls once around. Oscar is not careful and slips frequently. Once a day in fact. now imagine that Elmo is the moon. He has an instinctive attraction to Oscar and Big Bird has an instinctive attraction to Elmo. Elmo is completely over shadowded by oscar. Big Bird can only see him in full once every 30 days. the other days Oscar is in his way in varying amounts. On the 15th day Oscar is completely in front of Elmo. He then moves away slowly revealing Elmo little by little until he is completely revealed. Then the cycle starts over and Oscar slowly covers up Big Birds sight of Elmo again. This cycle keeps continuing forever.

let's say clifford is the sun, and t-bone is the earth and cleo is the moon. now, a year is when t-bone goes around a full orbit (an oval) and it's called a revolution. a day is when t-bone completes a full rotation or spin.
a month is when cleo completes a revolution around t-bone. what keeps these three dogs together is gravity. gravity is like t-bone and clifford playing tug-of-war with an invisible rope. and cleo plays tug-of-war with t-bone.

Hi Clara,
I heard that you want to learn about what a year, a month and a day is. Well you will know after this!
A year is when the Earth circles around the sun one time.
A month is when the Earth goes around the MOON one time!
And finally, a day is when the Earth spins around one time, like a ballerina. That's why we have days! Cool!

sarae said...

1. for one year to pass, the earth has to go around the sun once, and this is called revolution.

2. for a day to pass, the earth has to spin one complete turn. and that is called rotation. its like the ballroom dancers in cinderella, spining around in circles.

3.for a month to happen, the moon has to go around the earth once. like walking around the chairs in musical chairs.

so the earth is a ball, and it spins around in a circle like a top. when the earth spins all the way around once, its been a whole day.
a month is when the earth spins all the way around about 30 times.
also, the earth aslo runs in circles around the sun, a lot like when you run around your dad to get him to do what you want. when the earth runs all the way around 1 time, its been 1 year.

1.Earth. We live on Earth. Yes its a big round ball that is close to the sun. When the earth that we live on goes around the sun one whole time then we will start a whole other year. can u believe that? oh my goodness!

2. a month. Oh yes a month. We have our birthday during one month a year. A different month comes around when the moon goes around the earth that we live on in a full circle. a circle. not square or triangle. a circle.

3.When the earth that we live on rotates or stays in one place and twirls is when a day happens. when the side we live on of the earth is facing the sun its day and when we are not facing the earth it is night.

Dear Clara,

Are days are 24 hours long because it takes about 24 hours to complete 1 rotation. A rotation is when the earth spins 360 degrees around its axis.

The year is 365 days long because it takes about 365 days to complete 1 revolation. A revolation is when the earth goes around the sun on its orbit.

Are month is 30/31 days and its like thart because the moon goes through its cycle in about 28 days.

We live on earth- it is a huge ball and we live on it. We live very close to the sun, we go around in circles, elmo taught everyone what a cirlce is... when we go around the sun we revole( one complete trip along the orbit) around the orbit(the PATH that a body follows as it treavels around another body in space).

Year- when we complete a whole year we have revole around the sun 1 time.

Month- When we are going around the sun the moon is going around us! thats how we complete 1 month

Day- the rotation( planets spinning on its axis) and the earth goes around 1 time on its axis then we are done with that day!

The earth is spinning around the sun, or orbiting it. Everytime that it spins around one time, it is a revolution. One revolution takes one year. While it is orbiting, it is also spinning like a basketball on a finger. This is called revolution. It takes one day to make a full revolution. While the earth is orbiting around the sun, and revolving on its axis, the moon is orbiting around the earth. every time that the moon orbits the earth, it takes about a month.

Year: One year is determined by Earth's revolution around the sun. A period of revolution is determined by how long it takes to go around an object. In this case it is 365 days.

Month: One month is determined by how long it takes for the moon to revolve around the Earth.

Day: One day is the amount of time it takes the Earth to rotate once around it's axis. So when the Earth spins all the way around once it has been one day.

Hope Ju said...

The earth is the third planet from the sun. It revolves around the sun, for a whole year! It follows a path called an orbit. while it's following the path it's also spinning around in a rotation, that's a day.
The moon revolves around the earth like the earth revolves around the sun. The time it takes the moon to follow it's own path around the earth takes a month!

Okay, so the Earth spins around in a circle. When it makes one circle, that means it's been a day.

The Earth also runs around the sun. By the time it gets around the sun once it's been a year.

The Earth spins and runs around the sun at the same time. While that is happening, the moon runs around the Earth. Once it goes around the Earth once, it's been a month.

well,i hope that was well explained(:

For 1 year the earth need to orbit or needs to take a path 1 revolution or one trip around the sun.

For 1 day the sun needs to rotate or needs to spin around one time around.

For 1 month the moon needs to make a revolution or trip around the earth.

Dilon S said...

It takes a year for the Earth to revolve around the sun, 365.25 days. This is one complete trip along the orbit.

When the Earth makes a compleate roation on its axis this is how a day is measured. Rotation is the spinning of the earth on its axis.

A month is measured by how long it takes the moon to orbit around the Earth.

2. Clara i am here to explain space terms to you. Here's one, Rotation, if the earth turned all the way around so if clifford did one spin in the air then he would have completed one rotation and if the earth did one rotation then it would be one day so you would wake up and then go to bed then the earth would have competed one rotation. One revolution would be when the earth goes all the way around the sun and the path it follows would be its orbit. So if Clifford ran around the whole town it would be one revolution around the city and the path he took would be his orbit speaking stronemy terms. When the earth completes its revolution it would be a year so you would have had summer spring winter and fall\autum. And a month would be like if the moon went around the Earth. Hope this helps clara!

carlos has this friend. he only comes out at night, george, in spanish jorge, jorge goes around carlos and it takes him a whole month to finish!

carlos is a crazy good cross country runner. He runs aroung the sun in a year!!

okay so when you think of space you think of the sun and earth right?
well that is how we have a year .
the earth goes around the sun one complete time (that is called revolution) .
when the earth goes in a cicrle one time (like when clifford the big red dog turns in a circle when he gets hyper)also called rotation that is a day.
and a month is when the moon revolves around the earth (hopefully you remember what revolve means since i said it above :) )

1.ok so i day is when the earth's rotation (which is spinning on it's axis) axis is the imaginary pole that runs through the middle of the earth! and then a month is when the moon the moon orbits or(is a path that the moon follows aruond the earth like the yellow brick road) and then one whole year is called a revolution which isone complete trip around a orbit. then the earth has completed one whole period of revolution which is the amount of time a planet takes to complete a single trip around the sun.

the end

You probably know what train tracks are. Usually, train tracks aren't perfect circles. Our planet, earth, goes around something like that all the time. Trains go around it pretty fast. But, the earth takes one year to go around its track. When the earth spins in one circle, it takes one day. So when you wake up and go to bed, the earth has spinned around once. Sometimes, you probably see the moon outside. Everyday it is a different shape, your daddy probably shows it to you. It is a different shape because it moves around the earth. When it has moved around the earth once, it will be one month.

Seems like a lot huh? well i guess your daddy can sum it up to make it seem easier to understand:)

To explain a month i would say to Clara, A month is when the moon runs around(revlolves) our planet(earth)in a track form(orbit).A month is 29-31days.So think of going to bed that many ttimes to make a month.

To explain a year, id say to Clara: A year is when our planet(earth), runs around the sun one time in track(orbit).A year is from one of your birthdays to the next.or 12 months, thats 365 days. Go To bed and wake up that many times and a new year starts.

I am going to tell you about years, monthes, and days. One year is when the earth makes one revolition, or one whole trip around the sun. This is like when Cliford (a.k.a. the earth) runs one time around his big dog house(a.k.a. the sun). A month is when the moon takes one whole trip around the earth. A day is when the earth spins one time, or makes one rotation. This is like when Cliford (a.k.a the earth) decides to be silly and chase his tail. When he spins one whole time around he has made one rotation.

Hello Clara! Do you remember, in Cinderella, when she and the prince are dancing. When they are turning around and around, they are in "rotation". When they are spinning and dancing, but going all around the ballroom, they are in "orbit". This is the path that they are dancing on. When they go around the ballroom an entire time, that's "revolution". The amount of time it took them to dance all around the ballroom is the "period of revolution". This is very like how it is with the earth and the sun. The earth is the prince and Cinderella dancing, the path the earth takes around the sun is it's orbit. Like Cinderella and the prince dancing around the entire ballroom, the earth makes a full trip around the sun.
The time it takes for the earth to go around the sun a full time is one year, it's period of revolution. A day is when the earth is in rotation, and makes a full rotation, like Cinderella and the prince turning around in a circle. Just like the earth goes around the sun, so does the moon go around the earth. When the moon has gone around the earth a full time, a new month begins. So, it's just like Cinderella dancing with her prince.

Jaesine A. said...

Our planet, the earth, has to take a year to rotate around the sun. Rotate or rotation is when a object spins around in a circle once or even twice. You're 3 years old, right? That means that since you've been born, the earth has rotated around 3 times already! If you think about it, I'm 14, so that means.. Since i was born, the earth has spun around the sun 14 times! Isn't that crazy? Also, there are 12 months in a year and usually around 31 days in a month. The orbit is how the earth follows a pattern. Like with Dora the Explorer, she always has a map to help her go the right way. But if she didn't, she'd be lost. Just like the earth, Dora and Boots have to follow a common path.

When the Moon goes around the Earth that is a month. A day is rom the time you wake up one day to the time you wake up the next. In space a day is when the Earth spins around or rotates one time, like Lightning McQueen going around the race track.

Hey Clara, Im going to teach you about some cool things like how long a year, month, and day is. A year is as long as the time from your birthday, to your next birthday. And that can seem like a very long time. So when you turn four, you will no it has been a year since you turned three. A month is as long as it is from the first time you can see the whole entire moon, to the next time you see the whole moon, but the good thing is that it is not as long as a year. A day is the same amount of time as when you wake up in the morning today, to the time you wake up in the morning tommorrow and that is an even shorter time than a year or a month. So i hope you learned a little from me about time.

Isabel Schmit said...

Clara a day is from the time you wake up, play, eat, go to sleep, and wake up again. But what does earth do during the day to make the sun go away and the moon come up. . well our planet (earth) spins around in an ellipse (an oval or a long circle)and when we spin and face the sun it day time (thats when u watch elmo and clifford and eat snacks!) and then when we spin away from the sun its night time (thats when daddy reads u bed time stories).

Now clara a month is alot of days! Almost every 2 to 3 months it feels differant/ looks differant out side, when our planet is far away from the sun its cold and when its closer its warm.

Clara we are almost done!(: All we have left now is a year!! A year is from one of your birthdays to another so when you turn 4 it has been a whole year since your 3rd birthday! Or like when you have christmas and get lots of presents when you are 3 and then christmas again when you are four!! (: A years is the time it takes our planet earth to travel all the way around the sun!!!!

ok clara, i'm here to tell you about what we are learning about in science class! Have you ever wondered what a day, month, or year was? Good because i'm here to tell what that's all about! So when the the earth rotates, or spins in a circle like a ball that clifford plays with, that is a day, where the sun will be facing one side of the earth for one part of the time, and as it spins, night will become day! When the earth has made one complete revelution, (or a circle around the sun)kind of like cinderella dancing, that is a year. Lastly, when the moon revolves around the earth,(another circle)that is a month! though this isn't a very exact measurment. Well, that is all i have to teach you today!

camden c. said...

There are 365 days in a year, about 28.5 in a month, and 12 months a year. Why is this? It is because the Earth is moving around the sun in a shape called an ellipse, this shape is not a perfect circle, instead think of a circle with it's sides streached out. Because of Earth's movement around the sun, which is called a revolution, we have winter, autumn, spring and summer. The Earth is making another movement called a rotation which is a spinning movement. So the Earth is rotating and revolving in what is called an orbit. And that is why we have Years, days, months, and seasons.

Hey Clara! Whats up? I'm going to explain to you what a year, month and day are.

A year is 365 days. The period of revolution is the amount of time our planet takes to go around the sun once, which is one year. So when turn four the earth would have gone around the sun one time.

In a month there is roughly 28-31 days. A month is the amount of time the moon goes around the earth once. It's kind of like a year but instead of the earth going around the sun, the moon goes around the earth.

There are 24 hours in a day. The earth rotates and spins in a circle, like playing ring around the rosie(but doesn't get dizzy like us.) The time it takes the earth to rotate or spin on time, it has been one day.

ashleym said...

Hey Clara, I am going to point out that there are 12 months in a year, 30 days in a month, and a day is a little longer from the time you wake up to when you go to sleep again. A revolution is just a fancy word for a year. In a revolution the earth revolves, or spins around the sun. Which may look small from here, but is actually a lot larger than the earth that we live on. Now you're probably wondering how the earth stays revolving in a circle, well there's a special kind of pull called gravity, and it holds all the planets in place. This staying in place or the planets while they revolve is called orbit. A month would be when the moon revolves around to earth one time, and a day would be when the earth is rotating yet orbiting around the sun.

Ok Clara, I'm afraid that if I'll explain this I might melt your brain, but here I go. The sun is always staying still, it never moves. The moon is what causes months, the moon orbits (which means travels on it's path around the earth.) When the moon completly travels around the earth it creates a revolution, which is called a month. The earth is always moving around the sun. So when the earth moves around the sun 1 time it makes a revolution, which is a year. So while the earth circles the sun it is also rotating (spinning.) This causes one side of the earth to face the sun and the other one to face the moon. So that means that when the earth rotates it creates days.

lets pretend that your kitchen table is the sun. it shines and shines, and pretend you start running around the table. you would be like the earth. the earth goes around the sun, in a path called an orbit. every time you go completely around the table, or the earth goes completely around the sun, it is called a revolution. that is one year. now let's pretend that your dad is running around in a circle around you, while you run around the table. he would be like the moon. every time he makes one circle around you, he is the moon. now, if you start spinning around as you run around the table, then you would be rotating. every tiem you spin in one whole circle, then you have completed one day.

Hey Clara! How's it going girl! Well today I'm going to tell you what I know about years and months and days.

Okay. So lets imagine Mike and Sulley from Monsters Inc.

Okay.. so picture Mike Wasowski spinning around in a circle. He is full of energy and he is round so we are going to imagine him as the Sun. Alright, so now comes Sulley, and pretend that he is running in a circle around and around Mike, and he is traveling on a path called an orbit, which helps him not to crash into Mike. If Sulley was the Earth, every time he completed a full circle around Mike (a.k.a. the Sun) it would be a revolution, or the completion of a trip around the Sun. And every time that Sulley made a revolution around Mike, it would be a year. (If it was the Earth and Sun of course.)

Now Sulley is spinning around and around while he is running a circle around Mike. Every time that Sulley spins a full circle. It would be like the Earth making a full rotation, that is a day to us.

Little Boo is going to be the moon for us. She is running in a circle around Sulley, who is also spinning, and spinning around Mike. Now every time that Boo circles once around Sulley, it resembles a month.

Now I sure hope that made sense to you Clara. And I don't know about you, but I want to go and watch Monsters Inc. now!!

haha your friend,
Anna :)

Okay, so imagine Spongebob (he's gonna be the earth) when he is really crazy screaming "I'm ready, I'm Ready" and going around in circles around his house (the sun), then imagine Patrick (he's gonna be the moon) going around Spongebob. Now the once he makes it one time all the way around his house, will be like one year.

Next, it will be like Spongebob when he is taking his drver's test and he always spins the boat around, the boat is the earth, and when the boat (the Earh) spins around about 30 to 31 times, that would be a month.

Finally, a day would be like when Squidward is doing his dance routines, (he's gonna be the Earth here) and he is spinning around, well once he makes one complete spin, that would be like a day for the Earth.

Hope I helped!

Hi Clara!
I'm in your dad's science class, and I'm going to teach you about our days, months, and years. Our sun stands still, so it will never move. The earth is always moving, even though you can't feel it. The earth goes around the sun in a big circle. Once it makes a full circle around the sun, it will be one year. Now it gets sort of confusing...the sun is also spinning around in circles at the same time it's going around the sun (sort of like spinning in curcles while walking around a table). Each time the earth makes one spin, we get a day. A month is 30 days long, and there are 12 months in a year. You don't have to worry about all of this yet, but since you are learning all of this now, your teachers will think you are super smart!

year: A year is when the earth goes around the sun one time. It is kind of like when Lightning McQeen from Cars completes one lap around the track

month: A month is similar to a year however instead of the earth going around the sun, it is the moon going around the earth.

day: A day is when the Earth spins around once. It is similar to when Clifford is chasing his tail; when he goes around once, this is like a day.

Clara imagine your on a trak and walk in the trak and the trak would be going in a cirle and you would be on the out side the very last line and you would be the moon. Now your the moon and inside is the earth and when you rotate your sping in circles for about 30days. That would be a mounth and when you spin 1 to rotate the would be a day. Now lets say your 3 and your on the trak and you spinning for about 365.25 days that would be the year so when you would be done you would be 4. Now when you rotate in a place in a long time that would be called rotation and when your going arond something else like earth you would be in orbit. Now lets say your in space for a year and when your in spae for that amount of time that would be caled revolution.

let's say spongebpb is the sun, and squidward is the earth and patrick is the moon. now, a year is when spongebob goes around a full orbit (an circle/oval) and it's called a revolution. a day is when spongebob completes a full rotation or spin.
a month is when squidward completes a revolution around patrick. what keeps these three dogs together is gravity. gravity is like squidward and spongebob playing tug-of-war with gray the snail. and spongebob plays tug-of-war with patrick.
gravity it all around you clara so where ever you go it surrounds you.

Year: Its like the movie Cars; where Lightning McQueen is racing around all the cars in the pit area and Lightning is the Earth, and the pit is the Sun, and the other cars going around him is the moon. And the track that the cars go on is the orbit of our planets as they go around the sun.
Month: Its like when Bugs Bunny throws the baseball around the world to prove to Christopher Columbus that the world is round. If the ball was the moon than every time the ball came back to him a month would have passed.
Day: It's like when Clifford is chasing his tail. If Clifford was the Earth adn Elizibeth was the sun watching him, then every time Clifford turns in a full circle a day would have gone by and Clifford would be facing Elizibeth agian.
