Remember the Tides?

It was a week or two ago that we learned about tides (or was it 3?). We learned about what causes high and low tides, and the difference between spring and neap tides. Do you still remember tides? The reason I ask is because I was able to go on a field trip to observe them over our Presidents' Day break. This is what I found:
Using these pictures and the following info, attempt to answer the numbered questions.

  • Both pictures were taken from the same exact spot (The zoom for both snapshots was the same, too). The picture on the left was taken at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The picture on the right was taken 5 1/2 hours later, at 7:30 pm.
  • The high temperature on this day in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico was about 85 degrees F. I tell you this not because daytime temperature influences tides. I tell you this so that might be jealous, and that you might be reminded that this snowy, frigid winter will not last forever.
  • The moon phase on this particular day was a "New Moon".
  1. What causes high tides and low tides?
  2. Approximately how many high tides would there be on this day? How many low tides would there be?
  3. On the day when the picture was taken, was there a Spring or Neap tide? If so, which one? How do you know this?

High tides are caused by the pull of the moon's gravity on the oceans. When the moon is and the sun are aligned, it is a spring tide, so if there was a new moon, the sun, moon and earth would be aligned. There would be about 2 high tides and 2 low tides.

The gravitational pull is what causes high and low tides. there are two of each, high and low during a 24 hour period. It was a spring tide because the moon and the earth were lined up.

1. What causes high tides and low tides?-- What causes high tides and low tides is when the moon is on one side, the high tides are on the side of the moon, and on the side opposite the moon.

2. Approximately how many high tides would there be on this day? How many low tides would there be? There would be _2__ high tides, and __2_ low tides.

3.On the day when the picture was taken, was there a Spring or Neap tide? If so, whice one? How do you know this? yes there was. There was a Spring tide. Because the moon and the earth were aligned

1the sun and moons gravitational pull creates tides pushing and pulling steadily
2. 2 hightides and 2 lowtides since the times depended on the day if it was 12 then the tides would be high while the tides would be lower during the rest.
3.the days would have been spring high and low tides since a new moon was up with aligns the 3 celestial bodies earth sun and moon creating a spring hightide.

1. The positioning of the Moon and it's gravitational pull. The Sun has something to do with tides too, but very little.

1. Tides are caused by where the gravity is at.

2.um... high tides...2 ?
and low tides.... um... 3?

3. Spring... um because of the sun was not right of the tides

I probably did not get those right! just a guess on some of those?

1. The moon causes low tides and high tides. It depends on the moons position.

2. 2 high tides and 2 low tides.

3. High spring tide, the earth sun and moon were all lined up

1) High tides and low tides are caused when the moon's gravity is either pulling the water towards it, or pushing it away. That way, the spot that is closest to the moon, will have a higher tide, and the side opposite of the moon will have a high tide.

2)there would be two low tides and high tides a day.

3)spring tide

SamH said...

1. Tides are caused by the moon's gravity. High tides are caused by where the moon is at. Where the moon is closest to and the opposite side of earth of the close side is where high tide happens. Low tide is where the moon is closest to or opposite of the closest side.

2. 1 high tide and 1 low tide.

3. Spring tide, because the year was in its beginning and the sun, earth, and moon was lined up. Plus it was a new moon.

Haffield said...

hey mr. hoegh i accidently pressed sumbit comment after the first question so here are the last 2..
2.2 high and 2 low,.
3. yes, a spring tide. Because it was a new moon and it was directly behind the Earth at that point in revolution. When the Sun, Moon, and Earth are all lined up, it makes a Spring tide

Cierra S. said...

1. The moon and sun effect tides. And causes different high and low tides during the day.

2. There would be two high tides and two low tides a day.

3. High spring tide. i know that because of the position of the sun, moon, and earth. When the sun moon, and earth line up that causes a spring high tide.

Connor M. said...

1. The moon's gravity affectts the tides so that when an area is in line with the moon, it will be affected by the moon's gravity and will experience a high tide. Low tides occur when an area is forming a 90 degree angle with the moon because the moon's gravity does not affect the area as much at this point.
2. 2,2
3. Yes, spring, because it is a new moon phase the sun, moon, and earth are all lined up which results in a spring tide.

Sarah Q said...

1) The position of the gravitatoinal pull of the moon and the sun cause high and low tides throughout the day.

2)There would be two high tides, and two low tides.

3)It is spring tide. Because of the position of the sun, moon, and earth (They will all be positioned in a straight line). When they are all lined up, the moon phase is new moon.

sarae said...

1. high tides are caused by the direct pull of the moons gravity. the moon has to be either directly over or away in order to be a high tide. if its not, itll be a low tide.
2. about two high tides and one low tide because because the moon stays alined with the sun for most of the day until the sun sets and the moon fallows it so it will not be alined perfectly so it will be low tide.
3. spring tide because the moon and the sun where at the highest point at the same time with a spring tide.

Ryan J. said...

1) High tides are when the moon is right above that spot or on the exact opposited side of the Earth. Low tides are the place when the moon isn't hitting so the left and right of the moon.

2) Maybe around 2 high tides. Because the moon stays in line with the sun for most of the day. (???)

3) Spring Tide. Because it was a new moon and the Earth, the moon and the sun were all in line making a Spring Tide.

1. The gravitational pull of the moon, (and the Sun kind of, I guess...) When the Sun and the Moon and the Earth are all lined up, it causes a high tide. When the Sun and The Moon and the Earth form a right angle, it causes a high tide.

2. There would be two high tides, and two low tides.

3. A Spring tide, because it was a new moon. Every time there is a new moon, there is a Spring tide, because all of them are lined up. Making the pull EXTRA strong.

Tanner B. said...

1. The Moon's gravitational pull is what causes the tides and where ever the moon is the stronger the tide is going to be that is right under it and the farthest from it

2. their is about 2 low tides and 2 high tides

3. It would make it a spring tibe because when it is a new moon that means that the earth sun and moon are all lined up making it a spring tide

1) high tides and low tides are caused by the amount of the sun and moons gravity. mostly the moon but when they are lined up they are stronger.
2)there would be two high tides and two low tides per day.
3)spring tides are when the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are working together; the tides are very high and very low on spring tides.
Neap tides are when the moon and sun work at right angle so the tides arn't as strong or weak as during spring tide. Neap tides occur during the quarter moons and spring tides are on full moons and new moons
3 (continued) it was a spring tide because it was a new moon, and the tides were very high and very low.

1.the high tides are caused by the the sun and moon's gravity. but mostly the moon because it trys to

2. each day there will be two low tides and two high tides.

3. spring tides are when the moon is new of full. the high tides will be very high and the low tides will be very low. in spring high tide the tides will be very strong. during neap tides the sun and the moon are not aligned so the tides will not be as high and as low.

1. The moon and the sun. When the moon, sun, and earth are all lined up. The moon is the main cause of high and low tides, but when the sun is also lined up it is a higher or lower tide.

2. There are probably two high tide because when the Earth rotates it would line up with the moon and sun twice in one day.

3.Spring tide, because there was a huge difference in low and high tide.

1. the moon causes high and low tides and the sun also
2.2 high tides and 2 low tides because the earth rotates and stuff
3.there was a spring tide because the sun the moon and the earth were all lined up. because it is a new moon.

Stephen Bellman said...

The cause of the Very high tides and the Very low tides is because the moon and the sun where lined up in a straght line wich meens that the water will have a grater distens away from high tide because the moon and the suns gravity work together

2 high tieds and 2 low tides

Spring tide becaus the sun and the moon where lined up so the sun and the moon's graviteys where working toghether.

Amanda H. said...

1. The moons gravity is what causes high and low tides. The sun also influences the tides.

2. There would be two high tides and there would be two low tides.

3. On the day when the picture was taken there was a spring tide. I know this because of the moon phase. During this stage the sun, the moon, and the earth are all lined up. This makes the tides the highest and lowest possible.

Shayla D. said...

1. The pull of the moons gravity on the earth causes the tides. The position of the sun also influences how high the tides are.
2. There would be two high tides and two low tides.
3. Yes, there was a spring tide. You can know this because the moon phase was a new moon. During this phase, the sun, the earth, and the moon were all lined up. This is what causes a spring tide.

1.) The location of the moon plays a big part in tides. Another thing that the tides depend on, is the sun.
2.) There would be about two high tides, and two low tides in the 24 hours.
3.) It would be a spring tide. The moon is between the sun and the Earth, causing a Spring tide. If the moon was on the other side of the Earth, it would also be a Spring tide. If you could not put a straight line through a drawing of the moon, sun, and Earth, then it is a Neap tide.

Ricki Y. said...

1. High tides and low tides are caused by the moon's gravitational pull and also because of the sun's gravitational pull but the sun's isn't quite as strong as the moon's because of the futher distance.

2. If you were in Mexico during one day you would experience about 2 high tides and 2 low tides a day.

3. There would have been a spring tide because there was a new moon, on that day the sun, the moon, and the earth were all lined up.

3. There was a spring tide because there was a new moon, so the sun, moon and Earth were all lined up.

3-The tide would be a Spring tide, because that is when the sun, the moon, and the Earth are all lined up. So when there is a new moon, that means that they are all lined up.
