Static Electricity!

Below is a picture of Clara (about 2 years ago). She briefly turned her soccer goal into a fort/tent with a blanket on top, and (as you can see) some serious static electricity was produced!

After reading the short article AND contemplating some of your own experiences with static electricity, answer the following questions in a comment on this blog post:

  1. What causes "Static Electricity"?
  2. What does static electricity have to do with chemistry, atoms, and an atom's structure?

friction causes static electricity.
protons and electrons atract creating a shock.

1. Friction
2. Friction causes electrons to jump from one object to another.

Static electricity is made with friction. Atoms are clumped together in dry areas, while rubbing against other atoms, they create an electronic charge that makes the electrons jump, and makes lightning

Bryan B said...

1.Friction
2.When electrons are being rubbed together it causes friction, which then causes static electricity

Hayley H said...

Static electricity is caused by friction and then you get shocked when electrons jump from surface to surface.

static electricity is caussed by friction when atoms get more electrons so then the atoms are negitive.

electrons jump from the friction to your hand which causes a static shock

friction caauses static electricty and that the way Mr. Hoeghs Dauthter Claras hair went up

Static electricity occurs when an object is temporarily charged (atoms have too many or too few electrons). Static electricity relates to chemistry, atoms, and an atom's structure, because when static electricity occurs, atoms temporarily have too few, or too much electrons, which are a subatomic particle of an atom.

Mercedes Dalles said...

1. Static electricity is caused by positve atoms and negative atoms rubbing together.
2. Neutral atoms become charged when electrons jump to or from an atom.

Friction causes static eletrity when you comb threw dry hair in a dry place. The friction lessens in a damp place because hair holds the water more, which makes it smoother. When you brush your hair eletrons get torn loose into the atoms on the bursh, and the brush gets a neagitive , and the hair gets a postive charge, having lost some electrons. by olivia thompson

corey brewers said...

what causes the static electricity is the blankets.

electrons have a negative charge so the brush get a negative charge to keep your hair static

the energy that jumps around from electron to electron.

it has to do with atoms and atom structure because part of the atom structue deals with electrons which is what carries the electrical charge.

The electrons have a electronmagnetic force and is like a very powerful glue. When you have a dry area is causes your hair to stand up. Also know as static electricity.

1. When objects are temporarily charged, and it it unbalanced.
2. It has to do with the electrons, and when the atom is charged for a moment.

Friction causes static electricity.

Static electricity has to do with electrons and protons, and positive and negative charges, which has to do with atom, chemistry, and atom structure.
(pdp-please dont post,thanks!) (:

Static elcectricity is cause by the electrons get excited and the start refledting each ohter. The make hair stand up and make peoplpe have electricity. Electricity and atoms are the same because the electrons invole with the electrons and they make the electricity.

1. static electricity occurs whe objects become temporarily charged.

2.since positive and negitive charges cling annolyingly to the neitive charge friction occurs

Derick N said...

Electrons, have this electromagnetic force that is like a very powerful glue. In dry areas, friction is a lot more powerful in the dry areas. Some examples, your hair stands up when you brush your hair. Without the electromagnetic glue every thing in the universe would crumble. That is why it is important.

Static electricity ocurrs when ordinary objects like hair, fur, blankets and clouds become electrically charged.

It has to do with chemistry because Static electricity happens when atoms structure and how the electrons change the charge.

Bethany M. said...

1. When ordinary objects become electrically charged.
2. Each atom has protons, neutrons, and electrons. when the electrons don't balance with the protons, then a charge is made (the static electricity you see)

Madison J said...

1) Static electricity is caused by electrons and protons attracting to each other. They together make, for an example, hair stand up.
2) Static electricity has to do with chemistry, atoms, and atom's structure because parts of the atom, protons and electrons, are the main parts of making static electricity happen.

Chris J said...

Static electricity comes from the electrons creating a negative charge. Also, a lot of friction is involved with static electricity. Static electricity is in the electrons of the atomic structure. Electrons are what make up static electricity.

mercedes said...

What causes static elecetricity is electrons, because they are negativly charged. there are certain atoms that are negativily charged.

Static electricity is caused by friction
It has to do with the negative partiacls stick to the positive particals witch would make things stickto eachaother.

static electricity is caused by 2 high friction surfaces rubbing together (like hair and a ballon) while it's dry. static electricity is electrons and protons atracting each other to cause an electric jump when tou touch something.

1the electrons in her hair and on the blanket. also the dry air would help.
2 electrons protons andneutrons.
the eletrons in the adoms cause it.

Brita C. said...

Static electricity is caused when the nucleus of an atom temporarily become charged. This means they are temporarily out of balance. Either there are too many electrons making a negative charge or not enouogh electrons causing a positive charge. When they react this caused static electricity to happen. The way that the electorns react with the protons and nuetrons causes a react which can make atom's can their sturcture or change the atom all together.

Kahlen M. said...

1.) What causes static electricity is the negatively charged particals called electrons which surround the nucleus of an atom.
2.)What static electricity has to do with atoms, chemistry, and an atoms structure is that the electrons, and the protons try to stick together and then when it is rubbed with another thing it causes the static electricity.

Kyle H said...

Static electricity is caused when two objects rub together to make friction. Then the protons try to get to the electrons because one is positive and one is negative. Atoms have a negative and positive charge like static electricity.

Matt C said...

1.Friction causes static electricity.
2.shows what and how an atom works, it's molicules move around.

Ty Eslick said...

Static electricity is caused when two nuetral atoms obtain a temperary charge from the friction being forced between them. One of the atoms obtains more electrons, making it a positive charge, while the other atom will lose electrons, making it a negative charge. Since positive and negative charges are attracted to each other, it creates static electricty. Static electricity reacts with atoms, atoms structure, and everything related to it.

Nate B. said...

Static electricity comes from friction between two objects. Static electricity involves atoms because the transferring of electrons cause electrictiy

Dylan T said...

1.when two objects rub against each other.when obbjects become charged so they are temperarly unbalanced
2. static is made by lots of electrons that are swarming around the nucleus.

megan h said...

1. the friction in the air causes static electricity. If the air is colder then there will be more friction
2. static electricity is made by the atoms.

Kody the man said...

well when your hair is dry and cold your hair will come static electricity but first you need to conduct a expirement to see if you can do it all you need is a comb and make sure it is dry and comb it
static electricity is indead chemistary becouse it is indead a part of a adom

Madison T said...

Static electricity is produced when obejects temporarliy become charged. You can get it when your hairbrush picks up electrons from your hair, friction is the cause. This has to do with chemistry because chemistry is about atoms and their subatiomicparticles, and static electricity has those things to.

Taylor L. said...

static electricity is caused by a number of electrons causing friction which causes the atoms to create static.

static electricity is related to atoms and chemistry because protons electrons neutrons are atoms and the electrons in the outer shells of the atom cause a negative charge which is where static charge and friction are made.

Alexis I said...

Friction causes static electricity, when objects are rubbed together negativley charged particles unite and cause this.

Electrons are the negatively charged particles that create this friction. When electrons do not balance out with protons there is a negative charge that causes this friction to occur in electricity. This all happens in chemistry.
