To Be An Astronaut

Photo by rchappo2002, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial license.

NASA's accomplished missions are considered one of the crowning achievements in the history of mankind, and rightly so. The United States sent a man to outer space on the top of a jet missile, and then got him back to Earth. Twelve men walked on the surface of the moon, and they came back to Earth to tell us about it. As we begin to learn about our Moon and its effects, please answer the following questions by yourself or with a partner.
  1. What would it have been like to be one of the first astronauts? Describe the positives and negatives to being one of the first people in space. Would you have wanted to be in Alan Shephard's space shoes?

  2. Would you have been nervous/scared/excited/etc.? Explain. Do you have any life experiences where you have felt the kind of emotions that astronauts felt before launching?

  3. Could just anyone become an astronaut? What are some of the challenges to becoming one? Which qualities are the most important?

1)) To be one of the first astronauts would have been exciting but terrifying at the same time because it would be interesting to do something no one else had done but it would be scary because you werent sure of the outcome. We wouldn't have wanted to be in Alan Sheppards space shoes because who knew what would happen? It would be scary.
2)) We would've been nervous because it would be good and bad at the same time and it was really unknown all the things that could happen. The same feeling would happen when you are on a scary roller coaster before you start. It would be fun but scary.
3)) we don't think that everyone has what it takes to be an astronaut because your actions don't just effect you, they could be life or death for everyone else on the spaceship because one careless, forgotten step could make everything go horribly wrong so you need to be smart and careful and meticulous and you need to be trusting of your team.

1. I think that it would be extremely cool to be one of the first human beings on the moon, but there would be some negatives along with the positives. Some of the negatives would be that it would be kind of scary to be up in cold, empty, space. But being legendary outweighs that.
2. Would have been excited and nervous; before the talent show, I was nervous
3.no but being trevor helps a lot. you need to be brave strong resposnsible, that space ship probably costs a lot.

3)No, you have to train for a long time and be able to act in a good manner when under pressure and in skethey sitchuations

1 & 2. It would have been incredible to travel through this massive void of planets and stars and to go to somewhere beyond earth would be ecstatic. 3. No it takes months even years to go through multiple simulations of going through space at high speeds and how u will stand against the for of those high speeds.

It would be nice to be a part of history but also you are just hamster and you would have no clue what's on it.i would be nervous because if there was life and it turndown you it. Would like a zombie apocalypse. Anyone could go up there but it would take a lot of preparation.

1. I believe it would have been dangerous, and difficult because there would be many factors to consider. The previous scentece decribes a negative, but many positive things would occur to. If you were one the first astronauts to reach space you would be in history and hero known forever. No, because it would be dangerous and your actions reflects your country.
2. I think I would have been nervous, scared, and excied all at the same time. Rollercoasters give you the emotions that astronauts feel before launching into space.
3.No, you would need to be smart and have the desire to discover space. You would need to work very hard, and iccorperate critcal and intelegent thinking.

Nick and Ryan said...

It would give you a lot of emotions like fear and excitment because you don't know what is going to happen. Although it would be exciting to be one of the first people to physicsly explore space. No, Not anyone could become an astronaut because you need a lot of special training.

1-Being the first astronaut would be kind of scary not knowing what challenges you were going to face there since no one has been there.A positive would be getting the knoledge from going there and the great experiecnce. A negative of being the first one would be not knowing what to look for and not knowing what to expect. Or what knoledge to bring back. No, i would not of wanted to be in his shoes because of the fact he is the first one and doesnt know what problems lied ahead of him.
2-Nervous because you have no idea what it is going to be like or how you are going to live up there. Going on an airplane not knowing how safe it would be and you are just so high in the air.
3-No, not anyone could be an astronaut due to the training you have to do before hand and the responsibilities this job calls for. A challege would be getting used to the gravity training and just the way to adjust to live. The qualities that are most important would be responsibility, fit, and able to adapt to different place quickly.

To be the first astrounot i think wouldnhave been amazing. The first people to walk on the moon were the lewis and clark of our time. I would be very exited to get the chance tomgomt thenmoon, but also very nervous. No i thinkmyou need to be smart and brave.

1.) Positive is that you're one of the first people to experience the moon. You get to experience no gravity.
Negative you can't walk. No guarantee you'll come back alive.
Bad food. No past records of what the moon is like.
No, No, and No. Because I want to live. It'd be too scary, and we're scared of the dark. Not interested in the moon.
2.)Scared, nervous, and exilirated. Mainly scared. Because it's something brand new. Bri and Meghan: Dance competitions. Brooklynn: Softball tournament, coming up to bat.
3.)No. Dealing with no gravity. Being away from loved ones. Not knowing whether you'll come back.
Trust, Smart, Strong in Science, Hopeful

1. Scary because you have no idea what it is like up there because no on has been up there.
A positive would be that you would be the first to step on the moon and you would get recongnition.
A negative don't know how long it will take or how much supplies you actually need.
Yes, because you would be famous for being a person to set foot on the moon.
2. We would be scared and nervous yet excited to be able to set foot on the moon.
No, unless you count being in an airplane.
3.Yes, because most people that are astronauts are just regular people.
Challenges of becoming one are that you would be away from your family for awhile and you would have to do alot of training in order to go to space and become one.
Qualities are you have to be willing to be gone for quite sometime and you have to be brave.

It would be extraordinary to travel to the moon. However the training would not be fun. I think that being on the mooon would just be a amazing experience for us. Traveling to the moon is just such a wonderful place that only very few get to explore. Not only would we love to go to the moon but our children and future descendents would also enjoy the tale of us having our most thrilling life adventure ever.

I think it woul d be kind of cool to be one of the first to go on the moon, but there could some negatives to it. For example, you really might not know what to do when you would operate a rocket. There could also have the possibility that something could go wrong in the launch and you could plummet to your death! But other than that... I think it would be pretty cool!

Neil L Matt F said...

Scary. The equipment hasn't actualy been tested yet. You will become famous forever. No because so many things could go wrong. I would have been nervous. I felt nervous when i was rock climbing. No you need to be very calm smart and likeable. Likeable because if you aren't then you are stuck in a box with people you hate.

1.It would be mind blowing to be one of the first astronauts. It's a once in a lifetime expierience, but you would have to be away from your family for a long time.
2. i would have had a mix of emotions. It would be amazing to experience, but very terrifying and nerve racking.
3. No, there is a lot of training you need to go through to become one. You woud also need to be in great physical condition.

Positive you are the first person on the moon
negitives you dont really know whats going to happen

I dont think your emotions would be real. it would be a crazy feeling!!

No you would have to be able to pass the space camp or space school

1.It would have been cool, but at the same it would be scary.
Positives:
Being able to discover it for yourself
Seeing the amazingness of space
Being somewhere no one has been before
Negatives:
Thinking of the bad things that could happen (exp. running out of oxygen, aliens, etc.)
Not knowing what's out there
2.Nervous but also excited because it would be thrill to see space, but also nerveracking because of the things that could happen.
It's like stepping out on the ice before your figure skating program. You're imagining the things that could go wrong, but hoping for the best.
3.No because they have to study, and be truly dedicated. You'd have to look past the things that could go wrong, and look towards glory.

Jamie spicer, Alyssa williams, kayile alfred said...

It would be scary because you could die and you dont know how it's going to turn out. Positives you make history. Negitives it's very scary because you don't know what's out there. At the fair the tower of terror gives a scary gut feeling that you might not make it down alive. Yes you just have to go through intense training.

Gavin Borstad, Tevin Stults, Chase Ewoldt said...

1) it would be good because you'd be the first to experience it and it would be unique, the bad part of this is that you wouldent know what to expect, like any dangers or such.

2) We would be scared/ nervous. Scared because you wouldn't know what to excpect like monsters or people. Nervous because there are millions of people waiting to see what happens.

3) No, you would need to be very studios and be able to learn fast and you should probably be very brave.

Austin Cole said...

1. It would have been amazing being one of the first people in space. One of the positives is that I would remembered by people. One of the negitives is all the training that goes into it. I would have rather been in Neil Armstrongs shoes.
2. I would have been excited Because I would have been one of the first people in space. Ummmmm.........Yes one or Two.
3. No they have to be in good shape and smart. Good personalities are a must.

The astronauts would feel a little scared of their ship crashing or maybe they won't make it to the moon.
No because they need training what to do on the moon and repairs they might have to do.

1. I would have been scared amd excited at the same time.

1.)We would freak out in excitement. It is a once in a life time moment! The part that would suck the most would have to be... Away from family and friends. And knowing that your in space with nothing is kinda scary too!
2.)We both would have been really scared, because you don't really know what it's like up there, or you don't know when you'll be able to come back & yeah. and yes we have both been scared before so we know waht it's like.
3.) No, for those who are afraid of heights or who like knowing all the facts about everything, it probably isn't right job for them.

1. It would be very sweet to be an astonauts walking on the moon. Positive things are you can do flips and spins. Negives are that you dont know if there are any aliens that cold attack you.

2. It would have been very exiting, like when you put blackets on the rampoline and get double bounced.

3. No,you have to have extence training like flying in a cicle taking the G forces like a man. Being thug on the moon learing moon walking, for real moon walking not what Michael Jackson/ Mr. Hoegh does does. Legit moon walking.

Piper said...

1.) It would be wierd because there is no gravity. And you would have to through alot of trying to be able to walk on the moon.
2.)I would be nervous because you leaving your planet and going to a new one out in space. Like What if your spaceship broke. What would happen.
3.) Not anyone could become on. You have to go into a lot of training. And you would have to be Responsible. And do the right things

3. I think if you want to be an astronaut you need to be brave and really strong.

Dylan would try to pick up the moon or eat it.
Erika would be closterphbic in the spaceship and puke!
I think that going to the moon woul be very boring on the ride there. I wonder how long it would to' get there and if you have to' sit in tour spot the whole time.

1.scary,you would be famous, and you might not return. no
2.scared, you dont know what the moon is like.yes before basketball games
3.no, you would have to get used to space, and bravery and courage are impotant

Sierra Baum said...

Being the first astronaut would be harsh. Going to an unknown world without any experience. I would constantly be in fear that something will go utterly wrong and who knows what else may lay on the moon.

Launching into space would give me emotions like nothing else I have ever experienced. It wOuld be like going on the higher roller coaster in the world, but only more terrifying. I would hate being in his shoes just by thinking everything that could go wrong.

I don't think just anyone could be an astronaut. You probably can't be claustrophobic and specially trained. Also. Prepared to be left Out in space if you are "contaminated" or something goes wrong. Who knows, you may be part of a new conspiracy theory.

Bailey Z said...

1. It would be a life tine experience, but there are pro's and con's to the situation! The positives are saying you have been to space! You get to feel what gravity is like and eat astronaut food! The negative thing is you don't get to your see your family, there's complete darkness, and you have to wear a diaper or something similar to that! (Ew) So personally I would rather to stay on earth.

2. Super nervous! There are so many things that could go wrong, like in that movie called apollo 18! Or the spaceship could have malfunctions, and die! When I went zip lining I felt extremly nervous!

3. Anybody can if you have determenation! You would have to be pretty much a genius to be even considered of going out to space. You need confidence, determenation, smarticles, and to remain calm in any situation.

1. It would be an honor but very scary. One bad thing is that you wood never know if u are going to come back down. A good thing is that u wood have made history, been places nObody wood have been before, and Be famous!!!!!! You wood probably be on tv!!!!!!! We woodnt want to hag been alan Shepard cuz it was a life rising mission!!!

2. You wood b all of the following: excited because you wood b the first person ever on the moon, nervous and scared because you don't know if you are coming back. Or if u will even make It there alive.Yes, like your first time riding on an airplane, or Having a major surgery.
3.Not anyone can become an astronaut. You have to be daring, not afraid of heights, giving, not greedy, and open to new things and ideas.

1.) To be one of the first astronauts would be terrifying and exhilarating! One positive thing about it would be that your name pwould be in the history books forever and you would experience something that had never before been done. Some negatives are that you never known what the outcome of your journey will be. Will you even survive? I would not want to be in Alan's shoes because that would be a lot of pressure to be under.
2.) I would be extremely nervous and tense the whole time but the second I landed back on earth I would feel unbelievable. As I would be launching off, I would feel like I'm riding a roller coaster.
3.) Not anyone can be an astronaut. You have to be quick, clever, and on your toes at all times. You'd have to be brave. I'm sure to become an astronaut you would have to take classesk and course for many years.

2. I would of have been all of the above, because one I might not make it and I would be the first to make it to outerspace and the moon. I would be scared probably cry because if I would make it to outerspace because I would be crying because I would be in the middle of nowhere.
3.No you would have to know your stuff about space or else you might die. You have to know alot about space and you would have to have a lot of planning do to.

1)
a. Weird, abnormal, fun, AWESOME, foreign, neat, and many other exhilerating feelings
b. Positive: Being the first to discover/log about a foreign area/land; Negative: You amy not know the patterns of weather/temperature, no idea what it is like
c. No, because he was one of the few people who've been to the Moon, and me/ my partner would not be able to adapt to the food, enviroment, and well the process for going to the bathroom
2)
We would have mixed feelings as will others. Having a mixture of feelings comes from the excitement of the new discovery, the nervousness of getting the job done right, and the cluelessness of this new discovery (not knowing of how to explore the land and of how to log the mysteries and patterns of this strange place). I've been excited, nervous, and very clueless of many things; but not of the same feelings that these brave astronauts have felt.
3)
No, not neccessarily. If you have experience in astronomy, science, and other qualifacations yeah it's a great possibility. otherwise, you need a graeat amount of knowledge to become an astronaut.

It would've been pretty neat. Just knowing that I was the first. One of the fun things about being the first person is to know that you were the first, and you get to see everything before everyone. Also how you get to see everything in person. One of the negatives would probably be pretty scary of knowing of what could happend to you. What if you dont survive? What if something goes wrong? What if you run out of oxygen? I most likley would not want to be in his shoes, because I would be scared out of my mine. But at the same time I kinda would because it would be intresting. Seeing new things.I would be nervous, again thinking of everthing that could go wrong. A life experience would definatly be riding on a rollar coaster! Anyone can become an asternout, but you have to know what your doing. And you actually have to be intrested in what your doing.

Malia Lukomski said...

Being an astronauts would have been terrifying, especially if you were one of the first ones. Anything can happen. I would have felt scared and nervous and absolutely terrified. I don't really have any experiences that would evoke these emotions. Not just anyone can be an astronaut. Besides the years of training, you have to be brave enough to put your life in the hands of technology. You have to keep a clear head at all times and never have a breakdown. I don't think I'll ever want to be an astronaut.
