Recipe for Iron Sulfide

5 grams Iron Filings (Fe)
5 grams Sulfur (S)
HEAT (from Bunsen Burner)

Add iron filings and sulfur together, and place in test tube. Add heat from the Bunsen burner. Simmer for several minutes. Let reaction occur in a fume hood to prevent the aroma from going around the whole school.

Here is a view of what happened as our mixture of Iron and Sulfur became Iron Sulfide:

Some questions for the Crazy 8s:

  1. What were some signs that a chemical change took place? (What did you observe as the mixture in the test tube was heated?) Be descriptive!
  2. Did the properties of the original components change when the new substance was formed? How? Which ones?
  3. The mass of your new substance was less than the mass of the individual components that went into the reaction. However, in a chemical reaction, matter is neither created nor destroyed. What explains the change in mass?

1. They bonded together.
2. Yes they could not be seperated.
3. Because they bonded together they formed a new substance changing the mass. The mass could also of been changed when the heat was added.

Derek Thompson said...

1. Flame, heat, a new substance was formed.
2. Yes; different color, mass, and density.
3. The rest was turned to a gas and was sucked up by the fume hood

Mateo S. said...

1) The mixture had bubbled and discolored the test tube glass that had held it. Then it caught on fire.

2)The iron filings' physical properties were changed. They were no longer magnetic, and they were no longer malleable.

3)The mass went to the air when the mixture was heated. It changed into a gas.

1. Signs that showed a chemial reaction: there was a smell that was produced when the mixture was heated, there was a color change from a grayish yellow to a black, it bubbled when it was heated.
2. the magnitism of the iron should have wore off but my group's substance was still magnetic. Other components that changed where the color of both the iron and the sulfer. They changed because of the heat that was applied.
3. The mass was less because when heat was applied, some of the mixture evaporated as gas. That is why the mass of the new substance was less than the orginal mixture

Brianna :] said...

1. gas bubbles were formed after the heat was added, a flame formed at the top of the test tube, and a new substance formed.

2. Yes; the color changed, the weight changed, it went from two solids mixed together to a bubbling liquid when heated.

3. Some of the sulfer vapor escaped when the mixture was heated, therefore it was not included in the weight of the new subtance (after the glass was broken)

ConnerT said...

1.that the new substance lost all the physical properties of the sulfur and iron filings and that chemical properties were also changed
2.yes because the new substance was no longer magnetic and it was no longer a powder tipe substance
3.some of the substance boiled turned into a vapor and fumes were sent into the air

1. The iron melted, bubbles formed, color changed from yellow to orange to red, sulfur gas was emitted, a strange smell was emitted, and a blue/brown flame formed at the top of the substance.

2. The new substance lost it's magnetisim.

3. Some of the chemicals came out as a yellow gas.

1- the substance was melting. it was changing color so instead of it being yellowish brown it turned black. it was also bubbling a little bit. the substance also changed into a liquid.

2- yes, it changed because it turned into a liquid and it changed into a gas before it made the fire at the top.

3- because of the gas leaving to make the fire half of the mass disapeared.

1: some signs that a chemical change took place it was burning and there was a change of color. i noticed that it burnt in the test tube until it became a black reddish color and when the gas reached the top it formed a blue flame
2: Yes, the color changed from the burning, it was not magnetic because the iron reacted fully and the new substance became non magnetic. Flammability was shown when we burned it, and also reactivity was showned.
3: When we burned the new substance, it lost its weight from the burning i believe. when the gas came out of the beaker, and the blue flame i believe signaled it was losing mass.

#1. Well you started with 2 different elments. Then you put them together to make something different. A change in color, look, texure, it totaly went from a powder to a solid round hafe circle! Very Cool!!!

#2. Yes they did. The sulfur started as a powder, and then as it was mixed with the iron (powderish stuff) and as it was lit on fire, it changed into a solid. So there for both changed.

#3. After you have mixed the iron and the sulfur and lit it on fire, all of the extra fluffyness in the powder changed into a solid making it a chemical change. That made it lose mass.

Christian said...

1. When the heat was added, a flame at the top turned a blue, green, yellow, red color.

2. Yes, It was a two solids at first, but when heat was added, they turned into a liquid. But then it turned back into a solid.

3. Some of the componets in the mixture may have evaporated.

Christian Albertson is amazing!!!!!:D

1. the two elements were chemically combined and a yellow gas appered.

2. yes they did, the iron was not able to be magnetically seperated from the sulfur

3.the change in mass is that some of the elements were turned into gas and were released into the tank. the mass didnt change it just moved

allen said...

a chemical change happened when the iron melted and mixed with sulfur thus creating a new substance that could not be reversed since a new substance formed the properties changed from that of sulfur and iron to the properties iron sulfides propeties
3 the mass changed since the heat changed some of the liquid into vapor that went up also the energy give to the iron could have changed some the solid iron sulifde to vapor iron sulfide

Drew C said...

1. red light was given off, and toxic fumes were given off
2. yes, the iron lost its magnetism and its shine, and the sulfur lost its powdery texture, and its yellow color
3. the lost mass of the substance went into the toxic fumes given off, which went through a hose to who knows were

Unknown said...

1. Some signs of chemical change were:
-the substances combined to form iron sulfide
-the change is not reversable
-toxic fumes were given off

2. Some of the properties changed. The color changed and became a grayish color instead of black and yellow. The iron lost its magnetism and it's luster. The sulfer was no long powdery.

3. The mass changed because when the two substances were combined by the flame, fumes were given off so part of the substances were lost.

Raphie P said...

1. the iron and sulfur burned-which is not a physical change, which means it is a chemical change.

2. Yes because it was on fire. its color which changed from a light brown to a blackish, its texture which went form sandy to a rocklike texture, so the iron just like melted in with the sulfur.

3. some of the substance could've burned away causing the weight distribution.

Connor M said...

1. Gas was produced, the substance started on fire and bubbles were produced.

2.Yes, the new substance was non-magnetic while the iron in the mixture was magnetic. The substance also gained a new odor and hardened.

3. A gas was released and therefore some of the matter may of been released into the air.

Sydney K. said...

1. I noticed that the substance started to burn and let of a yellow gas. Then a smell came off of the substance, then (in some) a blue flame came out of the test tube.

2. Yes, it doesn't have yellow in it. Also, the iron fillings aren't magnetic, like they were before.

3. Some of the sulfur, I believe, was let off, as a gas, into the air. So the mass is less because there isn't as much, if at all, sulfur in the substance.

drewmun95 said...

1. the sulfer and iron burned and changed colors. a gas started coming out of the top of the test tube, and a flame started coming out of it. the gas was also condensating at the top.

2. yes. the color changed from light brown to black, and it hardened.

3. when it was burned, some of the matter turned into a gas and escaped out of the top

Ryan J. said...

1. When the flame hit the substance it changed color and shape. The Heat took the two substances and combined them to make one new substance

2. Yes. The color of the new substance was different from both the sulfur and the iron because they combined. Also, the entire material was magnetic now instead of just one substance.

3. Because when the two chemicals chemically combine their atoms are combined which made them one substance and that subtance was lighter than the two indivusual substances.(?)

1. some of the signs that I saw were that there was yellow smoke at first but when the tube got hotter the smoke eventually turned into a blue flame and the mixture turned a blackish grayish.

2. the sulfur changed. the color of the sulfur after it burned was not yellow. It was almost the same color of the iron that was mixed with it.

3. I think that the mass changed because of how hot the stuff in the tube was burning. the substance became less dense??? because of the heat.

Brodie R said...

1. you can no longer change the substance back into sulfur and iron, it was created by using flame which is a type of chemical change.

2. yes, it is no longer magnitized so it is not a metel i think.

3. some of the mass was burned off into the air when it was under the flame.

Haffield said...

1. a chemical change took place because the two formed and lost their individual properties and the color changed and made a bluish orange flame and there was a yellow gas.
2. one property that changed was maganatism. The iron lost its magnastism. The sulfide lost it's color. And both were really bad smelling
3.Because it used some of its mass to create the flame and it went into the air as well as the yellowish gas that came out of it.

Cierra S. said...

1. A sign a chemical change was happening was the to elements began to bubble and start on fire.
2. Yes they did change. Before the chemical reaction the iron was magnetic but with the new substance it was not magnetic.
3.For the mass to be less after the chemical reaction some of the origanal particles must have changed and caused the weight to very.

Katelyn H said...

1. bubbles formed, color change, started a flame at the top, change in smell

2.yes it changed by the chemical reaction that took place. It was not magnetic after, the color changed and the mass changed.

3.some mass went into the flame and gas that was given off.

#1- When the test tube was beening heated the tube turned the darker brown. Then when it was burned all the way there was a flame that came out the top there was a bluish purplish/pinkish flame that came out the top.It smelled really bad! Like burnt rotten eggs! yuck!

#2- yes it changed! the new stubstance wasnt magnetic like the old one, and it was hard and not the same color it was gray/black and was hard. Before it was black/yellow and it was a powder.

#3- I dont know? but i think by the mass a the test tube or by burning it is hardend to a lighter cirle?????

Kyle L. said...

1. When the two mixed together it created a yellowish black combo. Then flames came out the top.
2. Yes they did change both of them they werent soft and smooth they were hard and when they mixed it was a grayish color and it was lighter.
3. the mass was less because the mixture turned into a clump and some mass melted off. the reason is it melted so mass came off.

Sara E. said...

1. it showed a chemical change when the mixtures were heated and it started bubbling and smelling. that shows that there was a chemical reaction taking place.

2. the substances changed from becoming a powder, to a liquid to a solid. and when they were chemically combined the iron was no longer magnetic in the compound.

3. the mass changed because both of the elements combined together created a different element. also while heating it, some of the substance could have turned into gas and was no longer a solid.

allenc said...

a chemical change took place since the heat changed it so it was irrovocable and since it became a new element the element iron sulfide gained its own properties
the new element could have lost mass through energy realease

1. some of the signs of a chemical change were that it started bubbling. the mixtures melted into a liquid. the color changed into a blackish color. a fume was given off. there was a brown colored gas that came off of it. and it started flaming.

2. the properties of the orignal components changed when the new substance was formed. the color changed, no longer was it grayish yellow, but now was dark black. it also starteed turning into a liquid that was completely mixed. it no longer had two components that could be seperated. those hapened from the heat. the new substance also had a ighter mass than the oiginal.

3. the mass was lightened after the chemical change because we only measured the solid iron sulfate that was left. in reality, here was a gas that was let off that had a mass as well. it was put into the air, and in the end, all we could measure was the solid leftover part, the iron sulfate.

Tyler Beck said...

1) There was a blue flame coming out of the test tube and the Iron and Sulfur started to heat up and burn.
2) Yes, it became Iron Sulfide. It got hard and it turned black.
3) When it was heated over the bunson burner some gas escaped from the test tube and that was the missing matter.

hey hey heyy!!

1. Some signs that a chemical change took place were that the substance in the test tube bubbled, and it let off a gross odor, and a flame started, and melted the substance and changed it into something new.

2. The new substance changed a little bit, it turned silver, solid (not powdery anymore), and it was smooth and shiny. But the new substance was still magnetic.

3. I think the state of matter could change how the mass changed. like, it liquidized when we heated it. so I think that changed the mass.

The signs of chemical change were bubbling, change of color, the sides turned orange and then black. There was also a blue flame.

When the new substance formed some componets did change. It was not magnetic anymore, it weighed more and it changed into a hard solid.

the beaker weighed about 32.7. If it's a chemical reaction it's a NEW thing and it's defferent.

Signs of a chemical change was it foomed up when heated up. It changed colors and started to smell. And their was a fire that it made when it got to the top. The proerties of the original components did change when it made the new substance. It wasnt soft anymore and it wasnt magnites anymore because in a chemical reactiom the proterties of the substances always change as well as the substance. When you make a chemical reaction it doesn't really matter what the other substance and when you make a chemical reation you get a new susbtance and new susbtances weigh different.

1. There were a lot of bubbles and flames which are two signs of a chemical change.
2. Yes, by adding heat a lot of the components changed, the color changed and the iron was no longer magnetic.
3. A lot of the mass evaporated into gas when there was heat applied. That gas didn't stay in the test tube.

Britney T. said...

1) When the tube was heated a really bad smell came from it and a really cool blue flame erupted from the top. and the chemicals expanded and turned from and orangeish color to more of a brown-black colour. And a flame was seen inside the test tube.
2)Yes, the Iron was magnetic and really easy to seperate from the sulfur, with the new mix the two couldn't be seperated and it was no longer magnetic. The colors also changed from one gray and one yellow to brown-black.
3)The change in mass is explained by the flames that errupted from the tube when it was under intense heat.

Seth Shepersky said...

1.there was bubbling and a lot of smoke coming out of the test tube. and flammability is a chemical property.
2.Yes. the substance started on fire and lost most of properties. the substance also starting on fire which means in cannot go back to its original state. The iron was no longer magnetic.
3.the mass of the object changed but the objected just basically evaporated. so the substance is the same it is now just a gas.

1. It started to smoke and the substance bubbled and then a flame showed up at the top of the test tube.

2. It was yellow and it was a crystallike substance and it was hard.

3. I think that the difference in change was because of it coming together and when it was burning and when it was burning I think some of the substance was like evaporating.

1. well for one the whole process cannot be undone, that is a sign of a chemical change. Another would be that the entire sulfur & iron mixture is something completely diffrent now. it's FeS.
- the mixture melted down making a brownish color while the tube was turning orangeish, a blue flame was at at the top.
2.Yes, the chemical reaction changes the substance entirely, the color, magnetism, and mass, physical apperence and shape as well.
3. part of the mixture went into the air, others might still be on the test tube and the rest is in the new substance.

1.In this experiment there was a chemical change because when the elements were mixed they got burned and there was a fire like a red flame and then because there was a chemical change it is now a compound.
2.The properties of the new substance did change the properties by when heated and the new properties are that it smells like a egg, the color is a grayish black and sorta soft
3.The change in mass happened because when it was heated i think some of the gases did escape so the mass did change some.

1. the iron sulfide started bubbling in the test tube once it was heated, the color changed, a change in smell.
2. yes, the sulfur got harder when the tempurature got hotter, the iron lost its magnetic field when the tempurature got hotter.
3. all the extra mass in the individual components didn't account for part of the mass in the new substance, causing the new substance to have less mass than the idividual components.

Signs were, smoking, burning, mixing of the two components, bubbling.
They changed by color, texture, form, smell. Both the iron and sulfur.
The change of mass was some some of the components of the mixture going out of the tube in a gas.

In the test tube the substance stated to bubble and there were some yellow fumes that were changing the color of the test tube. also there was a change of color of the substance. The substance was a liquid when heated and then it changed into a solid when it cooled. 2.Yes. They changed when the heat caused them to combine together. 3.The mass was different because when the heat was put under the mixture it made the sulfur turn to gas and that made the mass less.

1.You could tell that there was a chemical reaction because there were bubbles formed. There was also a yellow gas produced and a blue flame at the top. There was a color change.
2.The properties were changed because the two substances formed together to make a totally new one with new properties. The new substance was no longer magnetic and it had a shine to it. The color changed from yellow to black.
3.The substance had less mass because during the chemical reaction there was energy given off and put into the air. This was caused by the heat from the Bunsen Burner.

1) The reaction was not something I expected to happen. The tube seemed to almost fog up with an orangeish glaze. Then it seemed as if things melted.
2)In a way the iron and the sulfur were the same as before the test. The sulfur was still yellow, and the iron still looked like metallic sand. Yet, they were connected like they hadn't been before, and the sulfur was frozen, rather than the loose flour-y form it was yesterday.
3)My guess is that it had to do with the form it was in. The iron looked the same, but the sulfur didn't. In fact, it appeared like there was less sulfur today, because of a physical change. Even if a chemical change has taken place, physical ones still can. The sulfur was more frozen, then loose as it was before.

1. Some signs that it was a chemical change, was that the actual substance itself changed color and it started to smell. Another was that there was a flame and the smoke came out of the top of the test tube.

2. Yes, the mass changed as well as the color and it wasnt magnetic like the iron was. Another thing that changed was the smell, it smelt a lot like rotten eggs. It didnt have any of the properties as the original components.

3. Some of the mass could have escaped with the smoke as a gas when the heat was applyed and that is why the mass of the compound was less than the original mixture.

1.) Some signs were that i could see the chemical propertyies changing like: the iron and sulfur mixing together. And the fire inside it melting the two together.
2.)Yes, and for instance the iron at the begining was magnetic but the sulfure wasnt, now none of it is magnetic. It was a powder before and now it is hard.
3.)Some of it may have evaportated. And when the two combined together it got hard and when it got hard it was mored compressed, therefore it makes less mass.

3. Im not quite sure but...i think the change in the state of matter had something to do with the change in the mass of the substance. When they melted together they formed a new substance and were chemically combined so they took up less space.

2.yes because it turned into a gas and it left behind some. the solfer was the first to go but some of the iron went to.

3.the object was smashed into eachother and less space in between

1. You could tell that a chemical change took place because as the test tube heated the bottom of the mixture burned first which made the mixture expand and fill up the tube. As the mixture rose to the top of the test tube the fire had a blue tint to it.

2. The components that were once a powderlike substance was now a liquid, the iron and sulfur mixed and created one new substance.

3. The matter was not destroyed but it became more compact, creating a lesser mass for the new substance.

Alison Murphy said...

1 and 2. A chemical change occurs when two substances form a new substance and the original substances lose thier properties. In the lab we recently did, we formed FeS out of Iron and Sulfur. Since a new substance was formed (FeS) and the Sulfur and Iron lost thier properties there was obviously a chemical change.

3. I don't know the actual definate answer to that, but I'm geussing that some of the original substances evaperated due to the heat.
