Minerals

When you first heard that we would be learning about minerals, here were some of the initial comments:

  • "So...... we're gonna learn about rocks....... OK......."
  • "Are there really minerals in a bottle of mineral water?"
  • "Diamonds, gold, and other gemstones are minerals. Can we keep the ones we work with?"
  • "Aren't there minerals in the Fruity Pebbles I eat for breakfast?"
In the past few days in science, your view of minerals has likely changed. You've discovered that there are many different classes/types of minerals -- each with a unique set of properties that allows us to identify one mineral from another.
In your comment, completely answer the following questions. If you don't want your comment to be published, that is fine! Just let me know in the comment you leave.
  1. Minerals are identified by their properties. What are some of the properties you used to distinguish one mineral from another? Why is it best to use more than just one or two of these properties?
  2. Did some of the properties "work" better than others? Which ones were the most effective? Which were the least effective? Explain.
  3. What was the most difficult part of identifying minerals?

1. luster, hardness, streak, and color
2. most- luster and streak because they vary making it easier to tell which is which
least- color because it changes
3. reading the number, and knowing if it was right &the miinerals that were very similar to each other were hard to figure out

1. You can use color, harndess, streak, cleavage, luster, fracture, special propertes (metalic, nonmatalic, submatalic) those are just a few of the ways. I prefer using the streak or the special properties (metalic, nonmatalic, submatalic). Color is hard sometime because you might not know if that's the actual color of the minneral. Lots of things can change that.

2. Streak because it brings out its natural color not the fake one (if there is one).

3. Color because it could of changed.

2.I think color, hardnes, and the shape of the mineral were most usefull.I think that shinny, and the other stuff didn't really work out for me.
3.The most difficult part were anelyzing it was hard.

1!!. Streak, Luster, Color, Cleavage, Density, Fracture, and other Special Properties. Using 2 or more properties is better than just using one because every mineral is different, so it has different special qualities that only it has.

2!!. Some properties do work better than others. If you are using streak instead of color, it classifies it better for its natural appearence.

3!!. The most difficult part was when they did not have a number.

1. Some of the properties you use to destinguish minerals are: color, luster, streak, special properties (ex. flouresence, taste, radioactivity), cleavage and fracture, hardness, density.
2. The properties that worked well where streak, and luster. The properties that are most effective where streak, special properties, and luster worked well. Color is one of the properties that didn't really work because the color of a mineral is often disrupted by water, air and other imperities.
3. The most difficult part of identifying minerals was probably seeing how hard the mineral was because we didn't know what the hardness of the object we were trying to scratch the mineral with.

Zach S said...

1 I used the streak and hardness to find which mineral is which.

2 The hardness and streak one worked the best and just the color didnt work that well at all.

3 Telling if it was matalic or not.

Cleavege and Fracture, and Special properties.
2)I think that a property that works is the hardness because we had a key to identify the hardness of a finger nail and copper. I think that the least effective was color because many minerals had the same color, but when it came with the different properties, they were very different.
3)I think that the most difficult part of identifying minerals is if it is meatilc, nonmetalic, and submetalic. For me it's hard to see if the mineral has luster.

1. Color, luster, streak, hardness, cleavage, fracture, density, and special properties. You should use more than one property to identify a mineral so you don't get them mixed up.

2. Identifying the streak worked the best since color could change because of water, air, or impurities. Hardness was one of the most effective and color was the least reliable.

3. It's luster was the most difficult.

Riley N said...

1. Streak, luster, density, cleavage, fracture, hardness, color, special properties. So you can put all of them together and know for sure that it is that mineral, because a mineral could have the same color, or luster, and it could be a different mineral.
2. I would say that the ability to scrath glass (hardness) and luster really helped because a lot of the rocks were the same color but had different streaks and it helped us identify better. I would say that color, or streak were the least affective, because most of the minersls colors and streaks were mostly the same, and it was hard to tell
3. I wouls say the most difficult part of identifying minerals would be putting all of the properties together. Because some would have a color and hardness that matched up but not luster or streak and the mineral didnt match up so you had to start over.

It is good to use more than one because many minerals may share the same color.

2) The most effective were the special properties like reactivity with hydrochloric acid or salty taste.

3)When many minerals share the same properties

Shane k said...

1. Because the properties may be the same for many minerals so you need to be sure to use all the properties on the mineral.

2. They are all equal cuz u cant be sure on a mineral by just the color or luster or hardness you have to do all of the properties.

3. The hardness cuz it was like a story problem.

2. Hardness was the most effective and easiest way to identify a mineral because it usually unique from the minerals we looked at. Color was the least effective because lots of minerals are the same color.

3. Some of the minerals were harder to figure out because they had many different colors which made it hard to use the dichotymous key.

1. some of the properties that you can use to distinguish one mineral from another are streak, luster, color, cleavage and then there are special properties like magnetism, flourescence, and acidic properties. in order to make sure that you have the correct mineral, you may want to check more than one property, expecially if one of those properties is color, since color can change depending on if it was exposed to water or air. this is one of the least effective ways of indentifying because it can change easily. a more effective way is streak. streak is the color of the mineral in powdered form, and can be found when mineral is rubbed against a streak plate. this is an easier way of identifying a mineral. the most difficult part is when you find two mineral's that are similar, they may look similar, but really are two completely different minerals.

1. you can tell minerals apart by there color, streak, luster, fracture/cleavage fracture or hardness. you can also tell by its special properties like how reactive it is, if its magnetic, and its florencenes.

2. the properties that worked better than others were the hardness, and the color streak becuase thats the two most unique properties. the outside color was the worst way to idenetify minnerals.

3. i think the most difficult part for identifying minnerals is that some of the properties are the same. and they look alot like so the only way you could tell which minneral was which you had to figure it out by the special properties.

1. color, streak, luster, magnetism, density, reacts with acid, flouresence, cleavage, fracture, nonmetallic, metallic

2. Streak works better than color because color can change very easy when the mineral reacts with air, water, etc.

3. I think that density was the hardest part of identifying minerals...well it actually wasn't the hardest, it just took the longest to figure out.

Connor M. said...

1. Minerals can be identified through a number of properties. Some of these are density, luster, hardness, color, streak, and special properties such as flourescense, radioactivity, and taste.

2. Some of the properties were much more useful than the others in identifying the mineral. For example, harness was very useful as few minerals share the same hardness, so even with a mildly innacurate hardness test you could narrow it down to a few options. However, some properties such as color were not very useful in identifying the mineral as many minerals share the same color and you may not get an accurate color reading because a minerals color can be affected by impurities.

3.In my opinion, the most difficult part of identifying minerals was deciding if a mineral had cleavage or fracture because we did not have the materails to break the minerals and even if a break was found it was hard to identify if the breaks were smooth.

1. color, streak, luster, density, cleavage, fracture, hardness, and special properties. using more than one helps give more factors to make it easier to identify the mineral.
2. streak, density, and cleavage are very reliable since color and luster can be affected by impurities, pressure, or just smudges of other substances on it.
3. sometimes it was hard to tell if a streak was light or dark.

1. Some of the properties that you can use to distinguish one mineral from another are:
- color
- luster
- density
- hardness
- fracture/cleavatge
- streak
- and special properties.
It is best to use more than just one, because you can't really know for sure what mineral you are observing by only knowing one of the properties, because many minerals have similar properties.

2. I think that the streak worked better than others, because you knew what the actual color of the mineral was. It was just in powder form. The propertie that was the most effective was probably streak and special properties, because most of the minerals have different special properties, that make it easier to figure out which mineral it is. The least effective property was luster, because it was hard to tell if it was metallic or nonmetallic.

3. I think that the most difficult part of identifying minerals was the hardness.. because it got confusing.. this scratches this, but cannot be scratched by.. ya know what im saying?? ya.. it was confusing.

yeah so i'm gonna start answering these questions now. so here i go . .

1- minerals are identified by alot of things. some examples are streak, color, hardness, luster, magnetic, special properties, flouresents, clevage/fracture.

:)

number 2: the color didn't work out very well because sometimes stuff can effect that. the hardness helped alot because it can't change. its always the same hardness. another thing that helps is using a u-v light. i don't know if i spelt that right but okay . ha.

number three: the most difficult part is trying to identify the color because it can sometimes be between two colors. or it can seem like it has specles of colros. (if you don't know what that means it means where there are a bunch of different colors on one stubstance.)

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) <--- you said it was okay to do smiley faces (:

1.) There are many properties. Some, called "special properties" are only for some minerals. Things such as being magnetic, or having fluorescence is having a special property. Hardness is another property. It shows how resistant that mineral is to being scratched. In order to dicede the hardness of a specific mineral, peeople use a Mohs Scale. It's better to use at least two properties because many minerals are very similar in at least one way. Using more than one is a way to specify which is which.

2.) Color is not the best property to use. Color is affected by things such as air, water, and impurities. You really can't get an accurate response using just color. Fracture and cleavage are also only an "okay" way to decide what a mineral is. Unless you do the test yourself, you cannot for certain know whether it is smooth, or rocky if it has been cut. Things such as hardness and streak work a little better. Of course, testing for special properties is the quickest way to decide what a mineral is, but unfortunatly, not all minerals have special properties.

3.)The hardest part of identifying minerals is the fact that many minerals are a like in different ways. Going back to the first question, it is important to do many tests, just to be certain that you have the right mineral.

1. Some of the properities are luster (how a surface reflects light),density (mass devieded by volume), hardness, cleavage (braking in right angles or thin sheets), fracture (breaking in chunks), special properties (things like taste and magnitism)and color . It is best to use more than one propety because there is more than one mineral that is black or has a hardness of 2. using more than one is the most acurate way to indentify minerals.
2. Yes some properties work better than others. Streak worked the best because it isnt as effected by air or water as color is. Color was probably the worst because it can be affected by inpurites and water.
3. I think that the hardest part of identifying minerals is that some minerals are very similar looking and have some of the same properties and it makes it hard to see the difference.

1. Color, streak, hardness, cleavage, fracture, luster, special properties like magnetism or flouresence. It is best because some minerals share some properties with each other like there color.

2. Yes. I thought that the hardness and special properties were most effective because only a few minerals had the same hardness and hardly any had the same special properties, and it really narrowed down the possibilities. I thought that color and cleavage/fracture were least effective because a lot of the minerals had the same color and a lot of them had the same cleavage or fracture.

3. I thought the most difficult part was trying to figure out if it had luster or not.

1-Some of the properties are the color, hardness ,streak color, clevage/fracture, luster, special properties-magnetism, flouresence, or taste. It's best to use more because then you have a better chance at guessing the right one.
2-Yes, they say that the streak is the most effective, and that the color is the least effective b/c the colors can change.
3-trying to figure out the difference between two minerals/which one they are when they have a lot of things the same, like color/streak.

1.) Some of the properties of identifying minerals are: streak,(the color of the mineral of powder form.) color,(the color can be affected by pressure and exposure to air.) density, (mass divided by volume) hardness, (how hard the mineral is on the Mohs scale.) luster (the way a mineral reflects light), cleavage (the way a mineral breaks along a smooth flat surface), fracture (the way a mineral breaks along curved surfaces, specail properties (there are many special properties). It is best to use more than one so you can be sure that you have the right mineral. Another reason is that you cant always tell by color and hardness. 2.) Some properties work better because color can be changed and some minerals have the same hardness. One property that is more effeective is streak because that can not be changed. The least effective one is color because it can be changed. 3.) The most difficult part is that sometimes two minerals or more have the same properties, or similar ones and it is hard to decide which one is which.

1. Luster, streak, hardness, color, cleavage, fracture, special properties. Special properties because some are magnetic and some are floursence.

2. Fracture, cleavage, hardness, and special properties are the most important properties, because they acan tell you what a mineral is in a little time and not take a lot of time. Luster and streak are the least effective because streaks could be the same color adn luster just tells you that light reflects off of it.

3. Identifing the luster of a mineral if you don't have a light.

1. Luster, cleavage, hardness, color, streak, metallic, special properties. It's good to use more then one of these properties because many minerals are similar in color or hardness, so you should look at it's different properties to differ it from other minerals

2. Color was not that effective because many of the minerals were similar in colors. However streak was defferent (if it had a streak) so that was a pretty effective way to identify a mineral

3.For me it was actually color, because I wasn't sure how discriptive to be and many of the minerals had similar colors

1.For some of the properties I had used: hardness, color, luster, streak. Some of the special properties were: magnetism, fluorescense, and cleavage/fracture.

2.Yes,I thought streak worked pretty well when testing metallic objects. I also thought that color had worked well when trying to figure out the first step of either the dark or light colored mineral.

3.The most difficult part in identifying minerals was when you had to identify the color of streak that the mineral had, and narrowing it down to the right mineral.
