Lots of things can change that.

3.In my opinion, the most difficult part of identifying minerals was deciding if a mineral had cleavage or fracture because we did not have the materails to break the minerals and even if a break was found it was hard to identify if the breaks were smooth.

number three: the most difficult part is trying to identify the color because it can sometimes be between two colors. or it can seem like it has specles of colros. (if you don't know what that means it means where there are a bunch of different colors on one stubstance.)

1.) There are many properties. Some, called "special properties" are only for some minerals. Things such as being magnetic, or having fluorescence is having a special property. Hardness is another property. It shows how resistant that mineral is to being scratched. In order to dicede the hardness of a specific mineral, peeople use a Mohs Scale. It's better to use at least two properties because many minerals are very similar in at least one way. Using more than one is a way to specify which is which.
2.) Color is not the best property to use. Color is affected by things such as air, water, and impurities. You really can't get an accurate response using just color. Fracture and cleavage are also only an "okay" way to decide what a mineral is. Unless you do the test yourself, you cannot for certain know whether it is smooth, or rocky if it has been cut. Things such as hardness and streak work a little better. Of course, testing for special properties is the quickest way to decide what a mineral is, but unfortunatly, not all minerals have special properties.
3.)The hardest part of identifying minerals is the fact that many minerals are a like in different ways. Going back to the first question, it is important to do many tests, just to be certain that you have the right mineral.

1. Color, streak, hardness, cleavage, fracture, luster, special properties like magnetism or flouresence. It is best because some minerals share some properties with each other like there color.
2. Yes. I thought that the hardness and special properties were most effective because only a few minerals had the same hardness and hardly any had the same special properties, and it really narrowed down the possibilities. I thought that color and cleavage/fracture were least effective because a lot of the minerals had the same color and a lot of them had the same cleavage or fracture.
3. I thought the most difficult part was trying to figure out if it had luster or not.
1-Some of the properties are the color, hardness ,streak color, clevage/fracture, luster, special properties-magnetism, flouresence, or taste.It's best to use more because then you have a better chance at guessing the right one.
2-Yes, they say that the streak is the most effective, and that the color is the least effective b/c the colors can change.
3-trying to figure out the difference between two minerals/which one they are when they have a lot of things the same, like color/streak.

Some of the properties of identifying minerals are: streak,(the color of the mineral of powder form.) color,(the color can be affected by pressure and exposure to air.) density, (mass divided by volume) hardness, (how hard the mineral is on the Mohs scale.) luster (the way a mineral reflects light), cleavage (the way a mineral breaks along a smooth flat surface), fracture (the way a mineral breaks along curved surfaces, specail properties (there are many special properties). It is best to use more than one so you can be sure that you have the right mineral. Another reason is that you cant always tell by color and hardness. 2.) Some properties work better because color can be changed and some minerals have the same hardness. One property that is more effeective is streak because that can not be changed. The least effective one is color because it can be changed. 3.) The most difficult part is that sometimes two minerals or more have the same properties, or similar ones and it is hard to decide which one is which.

2. Color was not that effective because many of the minerals were similar in colors. However streak was defferent (if it had a streak) so that was a pretty effective way to identify a mineral
3.For me it was actually color, because I wasn't sure how discriptive to be and many of the minerals had similar colors

2.Yes,I thought streak worked pretty well when testing metallic objects. I also thought that color had worked well when trying to figure out the first step of either the dark or light colored mineral.
3.The most difficult part in identifying minerals was when you had to identify the color of streak that the mineral had, and narrowing it down to the right mineral.
