Explaining Astronomy

Suppose that you need to explain the concepts of a year, a month, and a day to a small child such as Clara. Could you do this? First, you should know a couple of things about Clara:

  1. She is extremely smart for just turning four years old (I know that you're thinking, "Hmm..... she must get her intellect from her mother." Well, you're right.) Clara will follow your line of thought quite well.
  2. If you use the terms rotation, revolution, orbit, or any other term used specifically for astronomy, she might not know exactly what it means (Many adults wouldn't know what the terms mean either.) Be sure to explain these things as you go.

  3. It would help if you related these concepts to things a 4-year-old would know about -- like Disney movies (especially Rapunzel from Tangled and, of course, Cinderella), Elmo from Sesame Street, Legos, Clifford the big red dog, etc.

For each concept (year, month, and day) describe the motion of the Earth, the moon, and the sun. Good luck.

rotation- spinning around
orbit- the path clifford takes to go all the way around his house
revolution-something going around another thing that isnt moving
period of rotation-time it takes for something to spin all the way around.
period of revolution-time it takes for clifford to go all the way around his house.

1. Year- A year is like If you were a great distance from your house and you had to walk in a circle around your house and stay that same distance away the whole time.
2. Month- A month is like how long it takes to see a full moon, you see it once a month, so when you see it you have to wait a month to see it like that again.
3. Day- A day is like how long it takes to spin around in a circle. If you were to spin very slow, spin so slow that by the time you are back to where you started it has been a full day.

A day is the period, or amount of time, it takes for Earth to completely rotate, or spin, on its axis.

A month is the amount of time it takes the moon to make its full orbit, or path, around Earth.

A year is the amount of time it takes for the Earth to completely revolve, or go around, the sun.

Mercedes Dalles said...

To make a day, the sun has to reach everywhere on the Earth. The Earth spins, like a princess, around and arounds until the sun reaches all around it. This is called rotation and it makes a day. To make a year, the Earth has to look at all of the sun. It swirls around the sun until it gets back to where it started. This is called revolution and it makes a year. To make a month, the moon has to see all of the Earth. The moon revolves around our planet until it gets back to where it started. All three of these things happen all at the same time and the path the things travel in is called an orbit.

A month is like when rupnzle brushes her hair it is really really long so it takes her a month to brush it all!
a year is like how long sleeping beauty was sleeping before the prince saved her!!!!!

the year on earth or piorod of revolution takes about 365 earthe days wich the period for rotation is about 23 hours and 56 mins, the orbet takes the earth around the sun in counter clock wies from the north pole. one mouth is when the moon compleats a full orbet around the earth.

year: 1 year is a whole revolution.
which means the Earth has gone all the way around the sun. And when you have gone through all the seasons; summer, spring, winter, and fall. That is when you can tell its been a full year.

day: A day is when the Earth has completed it rotation 1 time. Its kind of like when a princess dances and she spins, that would be a day to us.

month: you can tell when it has been a month by the moon. if you look at it when its a full circle, then you look at it every night until its a full circle again, that would be a full month.

Rotation is just like a ball spinning which is what the sun does. All the other planets, like the earth, goes around the sun. The earth spins just like the sun does but it also goes around the earth in a revolution which is like the way you run in circles. The moon does just the same thing that the earth does. It spins in a rotation like a ball and revolvs around the earth, again, like when you run in circles.

a year is how long it takes us to orbit the sun. so say its your birthday to day and when it is your birthday again that is one full year. and there is 12 months.

a month is how long it takes the moon to orbit earth so it is usally 28 to 31 days for a month.

a day is everymorning from the sun till when it goes down and comes up the next morning that is a full day. 24 hours and a hour is how long sesame street show is so that would be 48 of those

Jordan Dorsey said...

one day is how long it takes for the sun to go up, then down, then up, like how long it took the prince to find the owner (cinderella) of the glass slipper. that one day is like when the prince and Cinderella danced in a circle. one circle = one day.

a month is equal to how long it took Mulan to study for the test to see if she would be a bride. it would be like her walking a little bit around the building to get to the test.

a year is how long Sleeping Beauty was asleep for. the prince road around the castle once, which is like how long it takes the earth to go around the sun.

Riley Olson said...

a year is earth's revolution period. Revolution is when an object goes around another, the earth revolves around the sun. It takes earth 365 days to revolve once, making our year.

Our month is made up of when the moon rotates, or spins around the earth. The earth month is usually around 29 and a half days.

A day is made by the earths rotation, or spinning. The night and day come from when the earth rotates where your location is faced away from the sun, making it night. and then as it keeps spinning the sun starts to come to view, giving more heat and light, making an earth day, which is 24 hours.

Bryan B said...

1 year is 1 rotation, so it would be like your birtday to your next birthday.

a month is around 30 days on average, and it is how long the moon takes to orbit the earth

a day is 24 hours long, it is when the earth spins one time, so if it was 9 in the morning, and you slept all day long till 9 in the morning the next day, that would be one full day.

Hayley H said...

The moon goes around the earth in a circle. When the moon goes around the earth once, it's a month. Thats called revolution. Also the moon is spinning while it goes in a circle. the spinning is called rotation. Also while the moon is going in a circle around the earth the earth is going in a circle around the sun. When the earth gets all the way around the sun it's called period of revolution. That is how a long a year is. There are 12 months in a year so the moon goes in a circle around the earth 12 times while the earth goes around the sun once. The earth also spins. When the earth spins completely its called period of rotation. The sun never goes in a circle but it also spins. Every other planet goes in a circle around the sun. The going in a circle is called an orbit. Each planet has a different orbit then the other because they can either be really close together or really far apart. All three of them, the moon, sun and earth all spin counter clockwise. Time on a clock moves from 1 to 2 and up. That is clockwise. The opposite way of the normal way a clock moves is called counter clockwise.

3. an orbit is the path it takes to make it around the sun. like a roller coaster. the path you take around the ride is just like the path the earth takes around the sun.

Month- If elmo (earth) was walking around seaseme street and was slowing going, big bird would be walking around elmo. Once big bird goes around elmo once he has completed a month.

Day- As elmo goes around the sun he is spinning too, once he spins one full time he has completed a day.

For a day to pass by, our planet earth (that we live on) needs to spin like a ballerina. The moon covers up part of the earth when it's night; (like playing peek-a-boo.)

For a whole year to pass by, the earth needs to make a complete circle around the sun. (Kind of like playing ring around the Rosie.)

When the moon plays ring around the Rosie all the way around the earth; that's when we have months

Dear Clara,
A day on Earth is like Beuty dancing with the Beast. When she spun around once. It is like one day on Earth. That would be called Rotation. A day on Earth is 24 hrs.
A year on Earth is a totol of 365-366 days a year. So it you run around the playground one time in the playgrounds complete shape that would be the total of one year on Earth. This would be called the Period of Revolution. The Earth revoles around the Sun and the moon revolves around the Earth.
A month depends on where the Earth is at in the orbit around the Sun. If you run around your room but you stop 4 times in different spots. These would show the seasons. But it all would depend on How close you are to the sun and where the period of revolition is at.
I hope this has helped you in many ways just remember it. But if you forget you can always look back at all the comments

Well Clifford the big huge earth revoles around seaseme street. But Clifford has a friend named Emily Elizabeth and she follows clifford while he goes around sesame street. In the day clifford makes alot of messes so Emily has to go around Clifford and clean up the messes, this is also is the same idea with the earth(Clifford), moon (emily), and sun (sesame street). THe time it takes clifford to go around sesame is almost the same idea as the earth goes around the sun. The time it takes Emily to go around clifford each day is the same idea as the moon goes around the earth creating a month. Also the time it takes Clifford to finally catch his tail it is the same as a day.

Anna Mahowald said...

Dear Clara,
A day as you know is when it is bright out, but really..what is a day? Picture this; you are playing duck duck goose with some friends, when you tap someones shoulder you have to run around the circle ONCE to get back to your spot. That is like the Earth spinning around ONCE, half of the time it is facing the sun, and half of the time it is not; the moon is also spinning but only around the Earth.

What is a month?
So let's say you are still playing duck duck goose, when someone runs around the circle 28 to 31 times that is the same thing as one month.

What is a year?
A year is when the Earth revolves around the sun one time. But that is a little confusing for you. So how bout you are racing your little sister around the house, by the time you start on your driveway to the time when you finish on your driveway, that has been a compareison to one year.

Ashley Zimmer said...

Year-
If Cinderella was going to a ball, and she spun round and round with the Prince, it would be like the moon, the Earth and the sun. To complete a year, Cinderella and her Prince would have to orbit (movind around something once) all around the Ball Room. The middle of the Ball Room would be the sun and the Prince would be the moon revolving around the Earth, Cinderella.
Month-

To make a month, the moon has to to rotate(spin) around the earth once. So, if Big Bird was the moon and he was rotating around Cookie Monster; the Earth, he would have to rotate once around the Cookie Monster to make a month.
Day-
If Tramp from Lady and the Tramp was trying to catch his tail, to make a period of rortation, he would have to spin once around to make a day.

month- in 1 month Clifford would be on 28 to 31 times, when the moon makes 1 full revolution around the earth it is 1 month, in 1 month Elmo would walk around Oscar one time.

year- in 1 year Clifford would be on 365 times! a year is one full revolution around the sun, in 1 year Oscar would walk around Big Bird 1 time and Elmo would walk around Oscar 12 times.

Hello Clara, i hear you would like to learn about how long a day, month and a year is. Well, to begin with a day is one rotation of the Planet Earth. in 3 of these days, the moon will change from a full moon, to three/quarters of a moon, and then another 3 days it is a half of a moon, then another 3 days it is a quarter moon. After another 3 more days it is a new moon, which is where the moon is completly black. After about 30 days, or 1 month, the moon would have a full revoulution around the Earth, which is where the moon goes all the way around the Earth. Although the moon has made a revoulution around the Earth, the Earth has not made a revoulution around the sun. It has only done a twelfth of a revoulution, so the moon will have to revolve around the sun 12 times before the Earth has made 1 revoulution around the Sun. Once it has made a revoulution around the sun, then it has been 1 year, which is 365.25 days long.

It's simple to understand how long a year is. You know the great holiday of Christmas? Yeah, well all know THAT holiday:). Anyways, a year, is the amount of time between one christmas and another. This means that the Earth revolves around the sun one time. Now, a day is the amount of time that the earth turns 360 on it's axis (so a ocmplete day and night), OR 48 sesame street shows. Now, a month is roughly about the time that the moon revolves around the earth, so about 1440 Dora the Explorer episodes, and if you're not sure how many that is.......it's a lot. Trust me.

When you wake up in the morning and then go to bed at night that is one day. Or in other words, one rotation. Earth's period of rotation is 24 hours long. Just like in cinderella when the clock strikes 12 midnight, it is the end of one day and the start of a new rotation. When it is rotating or spinning on it's axis it's a following an orbit or a path that leads it around the sun. When it makes one full orbit around the sun, which takes Earth 365 days, that is one revolution. Earth's period of revolutiion makes a full year. The Earth is spinning on it's own, while it revolves around the sun. As this continues, the moon is revolving around the Earth creating it's own revoltion and rotation. Every body has another body that it revolves around that keeps the cycle moving in outer space.
