Anything else?

The Socratic Seminar on Climate Change was yesterday. I thought it was really fun. Many of you have a strong voice on the subject. That comes from confidence, and, in my experience, confidence comes as the result of hard work. Thanks for working hard to make yesterday successful.

Is there anything you wanted to say on Friday, but for some reason did not get the chance? Well, here's your chance. Why does this issue matter? What research leads you to believe that Climate Change is caused naturally, or by humans? Has anyone (peers, parents, teachers) influenced your decision? How sensitive is our climate to CO2? What do you think of the "ClimateGate" emails? Answer these or any other questions about climate change in your response to this post.

After answering any or all of these questions, go to Ediscio and study the Greenhouse Effect Cardbox in preparation for the standard check.

Well I dont have much to say because every said but I think we cause MOST of the problems in atmosphere and global warming my grandma and my mom and dad told me this stuff but some things happen by other things like natural causes.

I think that climate change and global warming is due to the effects of both man and nature equally. Yes, there are many things that man has done to cause global warming but that doesn't mean that nature doesn't have a part in it. From all the volcano explosions that are out there and the radiation that is in Japan, there is global warming that comes form more than just man but nature as well. They are balanced. Although I'm not saying that this is a good thing though because it's not. We need to do our part to keep the world safe and keep the ozone layer strong so we don't all die a horrible death...

I am undecided on what is causing global warming. I think it is both. Global warming never happened until we came here. We release tons of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Natural forest fires let off CO2 and volcanoes let off ash and smoke. It could be both factors but we can only change one factor, which is what we are doing.

Adam A. said...

I was going to say something, but everything that I thought somebody already said. I believe that both cause parts in the warming of Earth. Naturally, the Earth will produce its own water vapor and other greenhouse gases, but these only seem to have done minimal damage to the climate. Human reasons have probably done more towards global warming, with all of our unnatural carbon dioxide emissions, which are not sometimes absorbed by trees because of deforestation. I think humans should do their part in helping the environment so the world will live past 2012 and even longer than that.

Anne R. said...

I still think it is mainly human causes because we do a lot of things that polute the air. But also I think there are some natural causes too. Like, volcanoes. The dissussion yesterday gave me a lot more reasons how it is both, which helped a lot.

This issue of global warming is very important because it affects our everyday life and how we live. Friends have influenced my decision that humans cause it more than I thought. Our climate is extremely vulnerable to CO2, although it is more vulnerable to methane.

----Because global warming is making the oceans rise and soon it might flood the shores and if we know about it then we can try to help to stop it and not let it get too worse.

----At one point i thought it was mainly natural but then i heard everyone saying facts about how humans did it more and i started to change to believng it's humans fault more. the debate really made me change my mind.

This matters because if they keep rising like this all the ice caps will melt and some animal species will be affected also. It is also important because if the ozone layer continues to go away it is going to get very hot. I think it is mainly by humans because they say cows have some affect and i believe that but it didnt start changing like this until humans started polluting and burning alot of fossil fuels. My mom and dad have influence my decision. Our climate is extremely sensative to CO2;Co2 is destroying the ozone! And i think of the climate gate emails that maybe to make money off of their research some scientists messed with climate data.

I think that natural causes is the reason of global warming. The reason why I think this is because I read an article on how scientist say that ONLY 5.53% of human activity is caused. Most science believe that human activities like driving don't threaten the Earth's climate. I also read that water vapor overwhelms all other natural and man made contributions. So basically the nature increases the amount of energy in the atmosphere over time.

1. This issue matters because if we weren't informed about what's going on we wouldn't be able to understand it. So since we know about it, we can try and fix it.
2. I personally think it's a natural problem because of course before humans arrived nothing really was a problem but when we did we started doing damage. There's no way to get around it. It's going to happen. Like the water vapor and C02 research.
3. Nobody has really influenced me, other than the research not much has been said about it.
4. I think that really the atmosphere is not really sensititve to it.
5. I think that the emails were really misunderstood and are kind of silly. Because professional scientist would know better. Especially on an issue such as this.

i think that golbal warming is false because i mean just look around it isnt geting any warmer were we live and all the fake email i mean just look at it i mean i dont see any changes i actlly see it getting colder i just think its an exuse for people just to be lazie and think they are actttly doin doing some good in the world.

It matters because we need to know if this problem needs fixing, or if spending all this money and time is a complete waste.
I think its a little bit of both natural and human causes. It oviously happens naturally. Past events show that, but i think that humans make it worse than it has to be. Cutting back on things like cutting down trees and driving cars might make a little bit of a difference, but not a huge one. And the whole thing with the Emails saying how theyre hiding how the temerature is rising i think just makes it even harder to pick sides, because you don't know whats true or whats a lie.

I still believe that natural and human causes are at fault. Yes, the natural causes are more effective and are at higher fault than the humans, but the earth can't stop it's self from melting the poles. We can stop or at least try to slow down global warming by stop burrning as many fossil fuels.

Kristie M. said...

This issue matters because it affects us all, either indirectly or directly. Personally, I think that global warming is natural. Our earth has been hotter than this before, many years ago, and I think that it may just be part of the Earth's cycle. Humans contribute only .28% of the greenhouse gasses, which isn't really enough to affect the greenhouse effect. Most of the greenhouse affect is made of water vapor, which us humans cannot control. I also think that our climate is just sensitive to CO2, which, again, we can't do much about.

Brooke ( BMWbz) said...

Why does this issue matter?

This issue matters because one day the south and north pole could be gone and we could have less land and the sea level would be over by a lot.
What research leads you to believe that Climate Change is caused naturally, or by humans?
Well what if scientist are just making up numbers and this is all wrong or what if the world will end in 2012 but they wont tell us the truth because they know that only a few will survive.
Has anyone (peers, parents, teachers) influenced your decision?
No
How sensitive is our climate to CO2?
Honetestly idk how sensitive our climate is.
What do you think of the "ClimateGate" emails?
I think that mabey it was a good idea to hack in but then again mabey it wasent, but if he wouldnt have mabey the people would have not have lied cause they know that someone could hack in and mabey thats why.

I feel strongly that I spoke my mind yesterday during the Socratic Seminar about Climate Change. It was hard to argue with all the points Imronn brought to the debate when I supported each one based on the research I had conducted. I believe I brought a significant amount of knowledge to the table though, and had loads of fun doing it... while drinking my cup of water with no ice cubes.

I think global warming is caused by BOTH human and natural causes. Natural occurences that cause global warming cannot be stopped; however, human causes can be made minimal. Both causes are equally at fault. If we decrease human-made global warming, there will only be the natural kind to worry about.

Kelsey R. said...

I think that the climate change is caused equally by humans and nature. I think this because I beleive that the climat eis changing on its own but then when humans burn fossil fuels and stuff then it just makes the climate change that much faster. I think that are climate is somewhat senstive to CO2 but not like super sensitve, I think that it is sensitve because our tempurature is changing but only by like 1 or 2 degrees.

Alexis R. said...

I wanted to say that people should be aware of what is happening and we should take some money but not a lot and figure out who is really causing global warming. I personally think it is natural because of how much water vapor there is in the atmosphere and it could be heating the atmosphere.

Sam D said...

Yesterday I had about 3 or 4 times. I believe that humans are the cause of global warming becasue many of the every day things that humans cause global warming like driving, smoking and burning stuff. Some things that influence my beliefs about global warming are commercials and other adds, these influence me by selling products that are supposed to help the enviorment like hyprid cars and recyclable products.

Tyler Hofer said...

I believe that the cause of global warming is human becuase we pollot the air to much everyday and its going to keep on getting worst if we keep on using fossil fuel. If we keep on using these fosssil fuels we will run out one day and it woould take forever to make everything go green. Also animals are going extict and sea levels are rising, plus lakes are shriking. becuase of us humans. If you look back 100 years ago the sea levels were fine and lakes are shriking. Are climate is not sensitive to CO2 because of the water vaper in the air.

murad i said...

I wanted to say that one ofthe causes of global warming is probaly the CO2 that is man made. Because there was an article that i read and it said that, One of the causing stuff to global warming is the man made CO2.

Also i think it is not humans fault because We didnt cause the valcanos to erropt and also we didnt cause the wild fires. Those would make the air pollute even more.

ZBarbour said...

climate change matters because each time the climate changes that means something is going to have to adapt to the climate. humans cause a rise in co2 by use of vehicles that are drive, use of gas and just the thing we use to survive. the climate is not very sensitive to co2 or else wouldnt the climate be worse then wath i is now

Imrann G. said...

Well this issue matters because it could be devoting our time to saving the earth or it could be delaying our time for more better things like a cure for cancer. Because Scientist have said that along time ago the climate was 7 degress higher then today then right after that it had an Ice age. No my parents havent influenced my opinon in Global warming. Our climate is not hugely effected by CO2 because most of the effect is from water vapor. I think that they might be hiding some kind of evidence from the public.

I didn't name all of the things that I had during thursday. I think that the human are causing the polar icecaps to melt. Who is influencing me is my dad. My dad said of all of the fossil fuel we are using up it will effect the climate making the icecap melt. But I also think that it is the nature. With the green house effect it is changing. We can't stop the natural things that are happening in the world but we can stop the thing that the humans are doing.

Brock Kortan said...

i think that people shouldnt jump to say its our fualts that glodal warming is happening sence we havent put forth the reasurech to see if its us or nature
also i dont get why were willing to spent millions investing on green products and green cars and etc.. but why dont we stop that and put that money to finding the problem and then on solution.
i think my dad is who influences me but i dontknow where he stands on this subject

I said most of the stuff i know yesterday

This issue could be the cause of what kills us in the future.

That only .28% of greenhouse gasses are caused by mankind

I think that teachers hav mostly persuaded me the most with all the knowledge and wisedom that they have

I think it is since it's been the major target of climate change

People need to hear about the climate gate emails because if scientists are lying to us then what is the truth?

No more questions

-It matters because if there is any way to prevent it before it gets worse, then we know how to

I think it is naturally caused because for one thing, not as much money has been funded to find out if its a natural cause. I know that is because it's expensive, and also would take a long time, but it still is unfair that so much more research is going into the human caused theory. Also, many of the temperature rises are gaged by land based thermometer thingers, which are not as reliable as space satelites since space satelites circle the entire ground. Another thing that stands out to me is that 17,000 scientists signed a petition saying they believed it was naturally caused, which sounds like a whole lotto people fer me (yes, i am aware of the spelling errors)! Lastly, it has been much hotter in the past, before we had factories and cars and a the things that are so called raising temperatures, and it turned out fine! So personally, i believe that if global warming is happening, it is naturally caused.

Austin C said...

I really think I said everything I wanted to. Just to say it again but I really don't have a huge opinion on this topic but I believe it was human causes that caused global warming. The way I see it is that nature can't change what they are doing but humans can.

Elite Ty said...

Yesterday I feel that I did confidently get my point across during the discussion. I feel that when it comes down to whether it's human or natural, that we really can't tell. Since research hasn't really been funded for finding more reasons that global warming is caused my nature itself, we can't be sure whether it's both, one or the other, or if it's even real at all.

Hailee Domagalski said...

i think it is important to know about climate change so if it ever comes up in a conversation you know enough to withstand the conversation and know enough to form your own oppinion. since we are talking about oppinions, mine is that global warming might be happening other places but not here where we live. im still not quite sure weather i think it is man of natural caused. i havent struck the fact that i say "yes!" that is what i am going to believe yet.

-This issue matters because it is affecting the Earth and not in a good way. We need to know what is going on that can or is affecting the Earth. The research that has gone into the issue of global warming and the greenhouse effect is very clear and extensive. However the scientists have only researched one side, the side that the greenhouse effect is caused by humans and burning fossil fuels. But the scientists have not researched the natural causes of the greenhouse effect, there is more research for the problem of the humans than the problem is caused by natural things. I think that more research has gone into researching the problem is caused by humans because we are able to prevent human causes more thab natural causes.
-I think that everyone has an influence in people's decisions on this subject because some people will go with the flow of things not form their own opinions. And people's parents influence their opinion because they look up to them and value their opinion because they want to make them proud and happy.
-The Climate Gate email problem is definetly something to consider when people form their opinions. We have picked sides based on false information. So our temperatures could have been low the whole time. Without us even knoing it we have formed opinions that we may not even agree with!

Emily Ertz said...

I didn't get to say that maybe one day that humans will invent new things such as cars that no longer use fossil fuels that harm the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. So in the future the only global warming would be made naturally. We should be concerned with global warming because if we truly loved this planet earth we would protect it for many generations to come

Kahlen M said...

My opinion might not mean much compared to everyone elses opinion, however what i think is that it is mainly natural causes but i also believe that humans have done some part to the way the temp. has risen. I remember reading somewhere where the amount of green house gases that we put into the earth isnt nearly alot compared to how much the Earth naturally puts into the atmosphere. The atmosphere is made of 95% water vapor and 99.99% of that is naturally made and it is one of the mai green house gases so it seems that we dont put alot of stuff into the air, but we do put some.

Kyle H said...

I think that global warming is natural and not human. I read about how the climate might not be as sensitive as we think. Also, there is the possibility that C02 helps the climate instead of hurting it. We haven't put enought research into natural global warming to know if it could be a possibility or not. Climate has been changing a lot in the past like with the ice age and the little ice age in Europe and we weren't burning fossile fuels back then.

There was nothing on Friday that I wanted to say and didn't really get to. It happens because of all the people in the world need to understand what they can do to help stop global warming. Our human causes are affecting some of how global warming is happening today. Listening to others in the Seminar helped me understand more ways of why I believe it is human causes and not natural as much, my peers. My parents and teachers help with my decision as well. They help me know a lot of what is going on in the world that I wouldn't be able to figure out on my own.

Chris J said...

There was nothing on Friday that I wanted to say and didn't get to. This issue matters because, people need to know what they can do to stop global warming. We can't do anything about the natural affects of the global warming, but we can focus more on human causes, because those are the causes that we can possibly fix. My parents influence my decisions, because I look up to my parents and they are my role models and I don't want to make bad decisions, so they help me make some of my decisions.

1.This issue Matters because if we don't know about it how can we prevent it from happening.2. The research of co2 in the air has gone up. This is because humans are using cars and those give out co2 and deforestation is also a thing to be conserned about because it is taking away the oxygen in our air.3. My teachers in the past have influenced my decision by the co2 and deforestation issues. 4.Our climate is very sensitive to because over the year it has shoot up very fast.5. The Climate Gate emails are just a hoxe the guy is lying.

Austin Eastman said...

I think mostly that we humans are causing global warming. I think that we are using to much factories and thats what is causing all the CO2 to rise in the global gasses. People who made me think that global warming is caused by humans are my teachers and tv. Our climate is very sensitive to CO2 because the global gasses are traping the CO2 and its heating up the global gasses making the tempature to increass every year.

katlynn p. said...

Yes I think that my mom influenced my decision a lot, because she has a college degree in enviromental studies, or something like that, but she is always talking about global warming, and how we have to do something, so I always thought that people either thought global warming was the humans fault, or that it wasn't happening. After the seminar and doing some reasearvch, it changed my mind. I think that global warming IS happening, but it's not totaly the humans fault, I think some of it is, but not totally, I think we could do some things different, but also probably the earth running it's course!

Alexis I. said...

I think that global warming is a combination of both human activity and natural causes. Fossil fuels from vehicles and the pollution that factories produce are chief factors in the process of glabal warming. But the fact that more CO2 is in the air and it's getting trapped causing a greenhouse effect is also a major problem. I believe that we could possibly improve this issue slightly but it will never fully recover. Someday it might be so tough that we can't do anything about it. All we need to focus on right now is protecting our Earth as much as we can, and not spend so much time and money on events that are bound to happen anyway!

Hannah A said...

I think that society has a big impact on people's opinions on just about everything. This includes religion, political issues, and of course, global warming. I think many people feed off the things they hear, and they believe anything that may sound interesting. Interesting as in, "this is going to make the world end while we're still alive." obviously that sounds more interesting than the actual reality of global warming. therefore, news travels faster and becomes more vague. I believe that humans are the main cause for global warming, but it may not be all humans. There is no EXACT way to figure out. The most we can do is try to treat the planet with as much respect as we can.

Kelli S. said...

Knowing about global warming matters because if we know whether it's caused by nature or human activity, then we will know whether we can help to fix the growing "problem". If we can't, there is no point in spending millions or billions of dollars in order to send the temperature back to normal. I believe that global warming is caused by both nature and human activity. Although nature produces most carbon dioxide according to some sources, we have such a massive population and resources are used in such abundant quantities, there is bound to be some kind of effect caused by us. No one has influenced my decision in this, only the evidence that supported either side, though that can't be entirely trusted either, as some people will change data to sway people's opinions. People like to know they have the power to stop possible catastrophic ivents from changing the world, so some people will change data in order to support their cause. Our world shouldn't be so sensitive to CO2, that is, if we had an anbundance of plant life. Deforestation can also be the cause of rising CO2 levels, because plants are the reason CO2 levels are usually so low, as they use it to live like we use oxygen.

Megan H said...

I think this issue matters because we need to know whats going on in our atmosphere. We also need to know if we need to fix or change anything. I think climate change is caused by natural causes. I think this because 99.72% of the cause of global warming is the gases in our air that are natural like water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other gases.

Madison T. said...

I didnt think that i shared that much at the thingy.. so heres my opinions. It is important to know about global warming because if we don’t know what the cause is, we won’t know how to prevent it. For example, if it was natural, we couldn’t stop it, just prepare. But, if it was human caused, then we could help prevent it from happening as fast or stop it altogether. The reasons to believe that global warming is a cause of human activity, from the source “Global Warming: Did We Cause It?’ says that some logical reasons would be that humans are burning fossils fuels, which are then held in then atmosphere and help make it hotter. “USA Today Interactive also agrees that over the years human activity like the burning of fossil fuels, have added carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere. They think that these added gases forms a wall and sends the greenhouse gases back down towards Earth, causing it to heat. Some of the reasons to believe that global warming is natural, not manmade, according to “Global Warming 101,” is that all the scientists who think the Earth is warming automatically assume that the Earth should stay the same temperature. Now, we don’t know if it should or shouldn’t, so that’s the first reason it could just be natural. Also, that compared to the greenhouse gas water vapor, carbon dioxide is only a very small part in the gases in the atmosphere that involves greenhouse gases. Water Vapor is a natural made thing. About the false emails, they influencei it to make me believe that maybe they were lying because they wanted us to believe that we were emitting more than we were, so that we would stop. Which also makes me think that we didn’t have that great of an impact on the heating if they had to lie about it, which makes me think that we should not spend more money on it if we are not whats causing it.

Johnny C said...

I think that global warming is both human and natrual caused. Because humans are driving cars around witch makes fasil fules that hurt the ozone layer and lets more Uv rays in and that gets traped by global warming! But it is natural caused because of all the C02 that gets traped in the atmosphere and that makes the climat warmer that causes global warming.
