Explaining a Day, Month, and Year

Suppose that you need to explain the concepts of a year, a month, and a day to a small child such as Elsie. Could you do this? First, you should know a couple of things about Elsie:
  1. She is extremely smart for just turning four years old (I know that you're thinking, "Hmm..... she must get her intellect from her mother." Well, you're right.) Elsie will follow your line of thought quite well.
  2. If you use the terms rotationrevolutionorbit, or any other term used specifically for astronomy, she might not know exactly what it means (Many adults wouldn't know what the terms mean either.) Be sure to explain these things as you go.
  3. It would help if you related these concepts to things a 4-year-old would know about -- like Disney movies (especially Rapunzel from Tangled and, of course, Cinderella), Elmo from Sesame Street, Legos, Clifford the big red dog, Super Why, Angelina Ballerina, etc.
For each concept (year, month, and day) describe the motion of the Earth, the moon, and the sun. Good luck.

Ok if you had a beach ball that represents the earth. Each time it spins around once is a day. Then imagine a tether ball is the earth. Each time it wraps around is a year. Months are just each section of the wrap around the pole.

the period of rotation is how long it take for the earth to spin in 1 complete circle, it usually takes 24 hours for earth to make 1 complete circle. the period of revolution is how long it takes for the earth the do 1 complete circle around the sun, there are about 265 days in a year. a month is about 30 to 31 days, a month for earth is a year for the moon.

1.Well Elsie, A year is when the earth makes a full circle around the sun-365 days a year.

2.A day is when the earth just spins around once. (It's hard to not get that one mixed up with a year, the only difference is that a day doesn't circle the sun it's just when the earth makes one full turn-365 turns= a year:)

3. Next there is the month, a month is about 30 days so it's like the earth spins around 30 times to make a month!

The year on the earth is the time it takes the sun to orbit, or circle, around the sun. But the the year on the moon would be the same as a month on Earth so if we start on June 1st and end on July 1st, that would be one year on the moon. Next, we have a month because that displays, or shows, that a year has gone by on the earth. The sun doesn't have an orbit, or circle around anything, because it's gravity, the thing that keeps us on the ground, is what is keeping the planets from leaving the solar system. Lastly, a day on Earth is 24 hours. The moon's day is about 29.5 Earth days, so to see the sun set, you would need to stay 29.5 days.

a year is the distance you go around the earth its like Angelina ballerina spins around the stage once. a day is the number of spins she takes to get around the whole stage. a month is like how many spins in a section of the stage winter, summer, fall, spring.

3.Oh and I forgot to mention that a month is when the moon goes around the earth once :)

a earth year means the earth has moved around the sun. A month is when the moon go all the way around the earth. a day is when earth turns all the way around but it dose not go around any thing it just turns around it's self amy

A year is it's period of revolution around the sun. Or a airplane going around the Earth. Which revolution means the period to go around the sun in 365 days. A month is different though. It's the moon rotating around the Earth. Rotating is the spinning of a body, such as a planet or Clifford going in circles. A day is the period of rotation to rotate once. Such as day when you to preschool and night when you go to sleep.

Dear Elsie,The earth is constantly making circles around the sun. But, the Earth goes really slow around the sun. So, when the Earth goes all the way around the sun, one time, that is called a year.
Not only is the Earth making circles around the sun but it is also going in circles too. It would be like if you were running around a tree but spinning your body at the same time. That is what the Earth does, but when the earth spins around once it would be called a day.
Just like the Earth is going around the sun,the moon goes around the Earth. The moon moves faster around the Earth, than the Earth does around the sun. It takes the Earth a year to go around the sun. But when the Moon goes around the Earth thats called a month.

Year- The Earth goes around the sun one time, Like when your playing ring a round the rosy with your friends and there is candy in the middle. The Candy would be the sun and every time you would be the earth, every time you go around the candy one time is a year.

Month- A month is when the moon spins around the Earth one time in a big circle.

Day- A day is when the earth spins one time. Like a ballerina, She will spin once and that is once spin.

Amber Rierson said...

Year- The Earth revolves about the sun one time. Like when playing a game of ring around the rosy with some toys in the middle. The toys being the sun and you and your friends being the earth. You and your friends would be rotating around the toys acting like the rotation of a year. (Revolves- Spins around the sun in a big circle.)

Month- A month is when the mood spins around the earth one time. Just like the example I said about the sun and the earth but this time the earth would be the toys and you would be the moon.

Day- A day is when the earth spins one time like a figure skater or a ballerina.

well one day is how long it takes the earth to spin 360 degrees
and one month is that times 30 ish
and for a year the earth has to go around the sun one time

Year: A year is the time it takes the Earth to spin around the sun.
Month: A month is the time it takes the Moon to spin around the Earth.
Day: A day have nothing to do with rotating around the sun, it is the time it takes the Earth to rotate (spin around) on its axis.

Tahia M. said...

A year is how long it takes Earth to go around the Sun. A day depends on how the Earth spins on it´s axis. When the Earth is facing the moon it´s night time, and when it is facing the sun it is day time. And Once a month the moon goes around the Earth.

jake kohls said...

1. a year is every time the earth takes one full rotation around the sun, which means if you wait until this same day comes again is a year

2.a month is every time the moon rotates around the sun, so one moon year is an earth month

3.a day is every time the earth takes one full turn around till its in the same spot, so if you look at the time and wait for it to be the same time again that will be a day

A year is the time it takes for the Earth, the planet we live on, or any other planet to complete a full trip around the sun. While a month is the amount of time it takes for our moon to make a complete trip around Earth. A day is the amount of time it takes for Earth to spin around in a full circle one time.

Spencer Swedlund said...

Well Elsie, I think that I'll start by explaining to you what a year is. A year is the time it takes for an object to make a full circle around another. This is called the period of revolution. So for Earth, it is the amount of time it takes for it to travel around the Sun in a full orbit. It is 365 days for Earth. That is longer than it takes Repunzel to brush her hair! A month is equal to a year for the moon. The moon travels around the Earth in about 29 and a half days so it is roughly a month. A day is also known as the period of rotation because it is the amount of time it takes for a body to spin one full time on its axis. You could think of it like Cinderella spinning in her pink dress. Well, I hope that you have a better understanding of what a day, month, and year is now. Bye! P.S. Tell your dad to give me an A+ on this blog response. Thanks.

Dear Elsie,

You seem to be wondering what a day, a month, and a year are, so I am here to tell you what they are.
An Earth day is when the earth spins around on it's axis. You may be asking me, random student who i have never met, what is an axis. Well Elsie pretend that you are watching a ballerina, and that she is holding her hand in the air, the hand would be an axis while the foot would also be an axis.
Now for a month, you would think along the lines of if that ballerina spun 30-ish times.
And a year is if she spun about 365-ish, which is quite a lot of spinning.
Now you know the general idea of how a day, month and year work.
Sincerely
A Random Student
(aka Seth Huntimer)

Well Elsie let me introduce you to a couple new things you may not know about earth and the moon. Lets start with a earth year. This Earth you live has a year that has 365 days, which you probably already knew, but you may not know how a year is made. A year is how long it takes the earth to move around the sun one time. It moves around just like how ballerinas go is a circle on the ice. A month is how long it takes the moon to move around the earth one time. Now you may also know that each one of these months has special seasons with it. Like from December to February its winter. One day on earth is how long it takes for Earth to spin it one complete circle. Just like how you probably like to spin in circles. One spin that you you do is like one day on this earth.

A year is how long the Earth takes to circle (orbit) around the Sun, one time. This is called its period of revolution.
A month is how long it takes the moon to circle (orbit) around the Earth.
A day is the rotation period of the Earth or how long the Earth takes to rotate on its axis one time.

Mason Miller said...

A day is the time it takes for earth to spin, or rotate, on its axis. An axis is an imaginary stick through the earth, like a marshmallow. It like the earth is a marshmallow, the stick s the axis, and the sun is the fire. When it's facing the fire, it's light out and it's daytime. When it's facing away, it's dark and it's night.

A month is the amount of time the moon goes around earth. When the moon spins, it causes phases, different parts can be seen. Once the same parts are seen, its gone around the earth one time. Like when a ballerina twirls, you only can see parts of her dress. When you see the same part, she has spun once.

A year is the time it takes for the earth to spin around the sun. Every year, the lights come out on Rapunzels Birthday. So the next time they come out, the earth will have gone around one time.

OK we live on a earth that is spinning in circles like Angelina ballerina, that means we are rotating.also while the earth and Angelina ballerina is spinning we are going in circles around the sun. that is called a revolution. there is a moon that is orbiting around us which means it is spining around us. so like Angelina ballerina has friends that are spinning with her. so when we are spinning it is split up into a year month and a day. a day is when we have a a daytime and a night. A month is when our moon orbits around us. and a year is when the earth is rotates all around the sun

the sun is in the middle of the galyxy. and every thing turns around the sun. the earths yeary is every tim we go around the sun once. a day is the langth of time we see the sun. and the month is when the seasons change.

sup elsie. apparently your dad can't teach you this, so he asked awesomeness to step up to the plate. Pure truth right there. anyways, i was placed on this earth to teach you, and many other children of my teachers, what a day, month, and year is. A day is when the earth rotates once on it's axis. This is kinda like cinderella because eveytime she spins around in a circle, so does her dress. so in a way, everytime cinderella spins around, her dress makes one full rotation. a month is when a period of time, 30 to 31 days, has passed. This is kinda like the beast in beauty and the beast because he had a time period, like a month, to find his one true love. A year is when the earth makes one full revolution. A revolution is like a race track. every time your car makes in across the finish line, you have made it around the track once. the earth's race track is it's length around the sun.

Well........One day is like when the whole earth turns around one full time! That is what you call rotation... one full time around the sun is one full ROTATION. So a period of REVOLUTION is one full year and that is 365 full days!!! An ORBIT is the path that earth takes to complete its rotation!! An orbit is like clifford because Clifford goes on walks and he takes the same path so it is his orbit. A rotation is like a dancer every time he or she spins and gets back to where they stated is one full rotation! A period of revolution is like a day times 365(:

A year is 365 days, this is because thats how long it takes for earth to orbit the sun, kind of like how long it takes Snow white to have a birthday. A day is 24 hours, thats how long it takes for the earth to spin around one time. Like how long Tiana has not become a girl again. A month is around 30 days.

Ashton Sperle! said...

A year is when the Earth goes around the sun once. It goes around the sun in 365 days! We separate the days by months. One full moon to the next full moon is a month! It's when the moon rotates around the earth once. A day is when we make one full circle.

Maddie R. said...

A year is when the Earth moves around the sun one time in a circle.

A month is when the moon goes around the earth one time.

A day is when the Earth turns around once. One day time and one night time.

Hi Elsie i heard you want to know
what a day, month and a year is. A day is like a ballerina turning one time and stopping at the point started, a mouth is like a Micky mouse show on Disney channel it takes 30 minutes , a year is like riding your bike around the block and going back to your house.

Lexis J. said...

I might as well start with a year, since it's the biggest. Okay, a year is pretty much when the Earth (Our planet) travels around the Sun one time, which is 365 days. Or to put it more simple, it's like watching a Disney movie. You watch the movie, and time passes right? Well the same kinda goes for a year. When the Earth travels around the Sun, it's been a year. Now time for a month. You've seen the moon in the sky right? Well, say you watch the moon, and it's full. But the next month, there's only half of it. That's because the moon just traveled once around us. So that makes a month. And finally a day. The Earth spins like Rapunzel does from Tangled when she's dancing around. And when the Earth spins once all around, that's a day. That's all I know pretty much in my own words, bye bye!

Have you ever celebrated New Years, and wondered what a year even is? Or why the moon comes out and the sky get dark? How about why there are 12 months in a year? Well, I´m about to tell you!
A year is a total of 12 months, or 365 days to be exact. See, the Earth takes a year to orbit one time around the sun. You just turned four right! Well because you just had your birthday for THIS year, your 5th birthday won´t come for another 12 months. Do you remember the movie Tangled? The princess in that movie had been trapped in the tower for a lot of years!
Let´s move onto a month! There´s 12 of them right!? Can you name them?? The moon takes one month to rotate around the Earth. For example, you will see a full moon each month.
Do you know what a day is? Specifically, a day is 24 hours, from 12 a.m., to midnight. It´s kind of like how Cinderella had to be back by midnight, or before the next day started!

When the earth spins around in one complete circle that’s one rotation. So one whole night and day. A revolution is when one thing like earth. Circles the sun and makes a complete trip around it so (about) one year or all four seasons. Orbit is like a string that invisible and the earth follows it.

Nick Newman said...

There are things such as a year, month, and a day. If you think of clifford spinning a ball on his nose each time it goes around its like a day. Same story but if he was juggling the one would go round and round and that would be the moon. If he was juggling 3 it would be one going around the other and those two going around the third one.

Hanah W. said...

Well let's say that the sun is a big beach ball aand the earth is a baseball and the earth's moon is a bouncy ball. So the bach ball is in the middle and it doesn't move while the earth is rotating around the moonwhile spinning, and if the earth goes around the sun once, its a year, and the moon is rotating around the earth while the earth is going around the sun, that means its 24 hours (1day)

Jordan Borns said...

A day is like a ballerina spin. Its only one time. A month is 4 sections of a year. One section is one month. A year is going around its orbit one time. Like a tether ball around the pole one time.
