GPS Contest 2011

That was pretty fun wasn't it? I enjoyed watching each team in action on Monday. The weather was awesome, which was a contrast from last year. So many of the groups did very well, and every one of the film canisters was found...... eventually. Here are the results from the 2011 GPS Contest: GPS Final Standings 2011
Period 3: Team "GAH" was victorious by a huge margin. What a dominant performance.
Period 4: Team "Monkey" wins by two points over the PowderPuff Girls. It turned out that this team needed to sprint back from a half mile away to prevent a more costly late penalty.
Period 6: Team "The Floor" takes down the rest, beating Team "Global Gym Purple Cobras" by one point.
Period 8: Team "Geocachers" and Team "BCC" tie for the lead in points. I've never seen a closer battle, as 5 of the 8 teams were within three points of winning it all.
Feel free to leave comments that you have about the GPS contest. How was your experience? Were there any waypoints that you just couldn't seem to find? What was the best strategy? If you had to do the contest again, what would you change?

That was really fun! I liked doing that group game. You should have the students do that more often. Really fun, hard to find a few... BEST strategy is to go for the outer ones first

I had a good experience doing the GPS thing. We tried looking for film canisters that weren't even there (the numbered named ones). I thought that the best strategy was to start out, and head closer to the school so we wouldn't be late. Next time, if I get a chance, I would probably be the one holding the GPS, because I have had experience with using one.

Well I liked the GPS lab. I think it was fun. Well we only found two by following the people who already found it and it was hard to find using the GPS.Are strategy was following others. Well if I did it again I would not use GPS and have it all in one area.

it was fun, even tho are GPS froze up . I would have taken a diffrent gps if i did this again , and go futher out. Because then we could have gotten more points

My group could not find kilowats we looked there for 10 to 15 minuets and we could not find it.

The GPS activity was a lot of fun to do! The waypoint "rest" was tough for us to find... actually, most of the waypoints were tough for my group to find. I think the best stratagy was to keep an eye on other groups, but to follow your GPS the most. I would change the the ways in which the waypoints were hidden, to make it easier to find.

I had a great time doing the GPS contest. It was very fun and i enjoyed it. There was a few way points we didnt find so we gave up and looked for the other ones. Best strategy was being fast and accurate. I would try harder to find the ones we missed.

Yo, the GPS activity was to die for! I feel bad for whatever sorry soul missed out on that exhilerating compition. Had I had more time, I garuntee I would have been able to find all of the way points. My favorite stradegy to use, was to zoom in and out frequently and look at the GPS as I moved toward a point. If I were graced with another opprotunity to conquere that quest for glory, I would have kept in mind to keep the GPS pointed North at all times, know that things will not be in plain sight, and take Mr. Hoegh's creativity into account. There were some pretty ludicrous locations for canisters.

Overall, I thought the GPS contest was very fun and even a little competative between me and Imrann's group. Even though we crushed them by 20 points and brought home the trophy for team Dodging Devil Donkey, me and my teamates had a great time. I wouldn't change much about the contest I thought it was already really fun.

the gps contest was a lot of fun. some teams(sam and ben) got really into it! my team couldnt find the one that was under the bench. abby and i would follow kristie, then when we would reach the location, we would all go different ways and search. my group wasnt very good, but thats ok!

It was a great experience doing this. At first we couldnt find the one in the tree but Derick finally found it. Being the first people to the way points and moving around to more than one area. For my group i would have gone to different areas not just around the hockey rink.

I loved the gps contest! The film canisters were in some pretty creative places!! My group got split in the beginning but me and Tyler Hofer finshed the job! At first, our map wasn't working on our gps, but then we got some help. Also, I got at least an inch of mud on my shoes..by the way, thanks for helping me scrape it off Mr. Hoegh! There was one waypoint where we were walking in a circle for at least 20 min, eventually we gave up. Later on, we found out that it was in a tree!! I wouldn't change anything, it wasn't too hard and not super easy either.

I think that the power-puff girls should have won. But we still havent found one that we hade a names on and we coulve won but it was a great time i enjoyed it after the testing for math and spainish.

My experience was amazing! My group and I had tons of fun! The one that took us the longest to find was the one in the tree. Our strategy was to find the highest point ones first and it worked pretty well!

The experience was great, the only problem was sometimes the Gps was telling us wrong information or we werent reading it right. What we ended up doing was looking at the instructions for 10mins to see how it works. Then after that we kept on finding them all except one at the rock. If i did it again i would probably try to follow the good teams, to be honest.

It was fun to be out and enjoy the weather during school the waypoint by the workers was a tough one to find because i didn't want to disturb them but i wanted to find the waypoint. the best strategy i think is to run out and get the ones furthest out and work your way inward. I wouldn't really change anything but i wouldve looked harder for them though.

I really enjoyed this, even though the Global Gym Purple Cobras came up short. I thought our strategy was pretty good by just trying to find as many of the ones that are the farthest out as we could. I don't think I would have changed anything we did.

I had a great experience with the GPS hunt! I liked using the GPS once I got the hang of it. There was one by the benches outside the library called rest that we would not find. It seemed like someone took it with them. But I think the best strategy would be to start on the farthest point and work your way in from there. I don't think that I would change anything about the contest except maybe staggering the teams release from the classroom there was one team that just followed us around.

I thought the geochashing was just ravishing. I felt that i had an amazing team that contributed towards the group as much as i did. However i am disappointed the the global gym purple cobras have achieved second place again. I thought we could pull it off. I would not change anything besides no letting the floor near us when we find things... grr.

Blue was the most exciting to find! Team USA was the first to find it that day! You arrived at your destination thinking nothing was there, when really, it was right in front of your eyes! You get so used to searching in hidden places for all the others and you forget about easy things like that. :)

My experience of doing the GPS contest was very good I wished I could of done it again. But if I got to do it again my team would've went for the ones that were more points than the ones in region 1

I thought it was a great experience and i had a lot of fun. There were no waypoints that our team could not find. Go to the long ones first and work your way back. Use time more wisely.

i think it was a very fun experience but a little confusing. well no we found all the close ones around the school that helped us win. i dont know just to go walk around and look at the gps.
proboly not be so loud when finding one. :)

My experience was very fun. We could not find Dark 2 is what I think it was called. The best strategy for us was to spilt up and have Johnny and I use the Geo Chasher and have Luke and Dylan to follow Lukas' group. If I would of had to do this again, I probably would have been there at the beginning of class so I knew how to run the GPS. Over all, it was very fun!

my expereince during the gps finder was really fun because i could run around and look for things. No i could find all waypoints that i was looking over. My strategy was to just run in the area that the waypoint was and just try to find the canister before everyone else did and it worked. If i could do the contest again i would hold the gps because i like trying to find things.

I really loved the GPS contest, it was so much fun! I also like getting to pick my team, so then we got along better, and would actually talk and make it more enjoyable!(: There was one wavepoint that I couldn't find, but me and my team pulled togather, and we found it, the one under the rusted metal thing by on the sidewalk out front.

I enjoyed going outside and getting some fresh air with a hands on activity. The Garmin GPS was a little difficult to read because the points were in a radius around us,not exactly on that point which made it more challenging. Although we didn't win it was quite the race and I had fun. I would maybe work a little faster if I could do it over again.
